Laboratory Exercise
Introduction to Operating Systems (OS)
Objective(s):

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

 Determine the key functions of operating systems; and

 Analyze the concept of some operating systems.

Instructions:

1. Select a computing device or gadget (i.e., smartphone, tablet, and laptop) that you currently have
access to. Then, retrieve the following details about the device (5 points):
Device Brand/Model:
DESKTOP-PNNVGGA
Operating System (OS):
Windows 10Pro
OS Version/Build: 19044.2006
Size of the RAM: 16 GB
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.70 GHz
Display Quality:
1440x900
2. Answer the following items in 3 to 5 sentences only (5 items x 5 points):
a. Describe the performance of your device.
- I would give the performance of my device as an 8/10 since, while it is not a powerful build, it
provides me with the performance I require for my everyday tasks. I choose to build my own
personal computer rather than buy one from a store since I can select the best parts for my
needs.
b. In your opinion, does the operating system affect the overall performance of your
device? Why or why not?
- Yes, it has an effect on overall speed; there are a few apps that demand a high amount of
RAM, such as editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro, games, and so on. This program
requires a computer that is above average. This software consumes a significant amount of
CPU power on your PC.

c. Give five (5) installed applications that greatly affect the processing speed or
performance of your device.
-Google Chrome Adope
premiere Pro Adope
Photoshop
Games
Unreal Engine

d. In your perspective, is there a possible relationship between the processor and the
display quality of your device? Rationalize your answer.
- No, the processor has no effect on display output because it is entirely handled by the display
controller of your integrated or dedicated GP; note how the display controller/engine block is
separated from the individual CPU cores, implying that there is no possible relationship
between the processor and the display.

e. Operating System, RAM, or Processor. Which among the three would you upgrade
first and why?
- So, if I had to select between upgrading the operating system, RAM, or processor. I believe
it is the Memory since it is less expensive than the CPU, and a strong processor with a

limited quantity of ram is an imbalance; you cannot utilize the power of your processor.

3. Search for another example of an operating system (aside from the operating systems that are
already included in the handout) and examine its architecture and specifications. Then, answer the
following items:
a. What is the name of the operating system? (2 points)
Chrome OS
b. What is the latest version of the operating system? (2 points)
Chrome 94
c. Who developed the operating system? (3 points)
Chrome is a Gentoo Linux-based operating system designed by Google.
d. Cite your reference(s). (3 points) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_OS#:~:text=Chrome

e. Describe the internal architecture of the operating system. (5 points)
Chromium os consists of three major components. The Chromium-based browser and
the window manager. System-level software and user-land services. And lastly the
Firmware.
f. What makes the operating system unique? Rationalize your answer. (5 points)
Well, Chrome os is an operating system developed and owned by Google. It's based on
Linux and is open source, which also means it's free and it is also simple to use.
