CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In these changing times, toddlers are more driven towards using a mobile phone

for every purpose. A smartphone they call it. A mobile phone hence can be used for a

game of such purposes. Every mobile app has a unique feature which offers its own set of

services like the developers proposed system that is simple, attractive, eye catching to the

toddlers and has user friendly graphics. They can interact with the mobile phone and they

will enjoy to play different games while learning. Learning is a continuous process and

the focus has now completely shifted to eLearning. Due to the mobile phones and the

various feature-oriented applications, toddlers can learn at their pace and take their time

at understanding things, as everything is just a click away. In the new learning methods

there are fun games available on mobile applications that indulge the toddlers into a

healthy thought process and help them understand things from a different perspective.

According to Ellen Seidman 2015, she stated that more than one-third of babies

are clicking around on smartphones and tablets—tots as young as six months old—finds a

new study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting. Based on her

survey of 370 parents visiting a pediatric clinic in Philadelphia, 36% of children under 1

years old had touched or scrolled a screen, 15% used apps, and 12% played video games.

By age 2, the majority of kids were using mobile devices.

1
She further stated that many parents let children use their devices for practical

reasons; 73% of parents in the survey said they let their kids play with mobile devices

while they were doing household chores, and 65% did so while running errand. Of

course, it makes good sense that lots of screen time isn't healthy for any child, and may

not be an ideal activity for babies. Nor should it substitute for good old playtime. Parents

need to avoid overdoing it, too. That's fun for both parent of child and a relief for

everyone waiting on line around them.

Based on researchers’ observation children using mobile phones in school and at

home for learning. The researchers knew someone that allowed their child to use mobile

phones every day for learning and playing. Parents consume that time for bonding and her

child learns well from the game app that they played. The researchers expected that this

proposed system will be love by the parents, teacher and they will let their children use it.

Existing System

“Progressive education, students do not have to change how they learn. Teachers

adapt to students, instead of students adapting to the teaching method in place. Students

can learn based on their interests and strengths...Progressive education best fits me

personally, and that is why I love The Little School so much.” (Daniel P., Outgrower

2016).

At the National Child Development Care School, they already removed of the

traditional education because of the millennium era. Young people ages 11 months – 5

2
years old today are different in their study preferences. They are more active in the things

that may help boost their memory. The teacher way of teaching is by praying through

interpretations and they are following the song by dancing and the teacher teaches the

children singing educational songs. She prepared daily activities that are fun and

enjoyable like coloring, tracing, cutting objects and they attached it to designed paper and

she teaches good morals and right conduct.

The developers propose this project to develop a learning tool with an attractive

design that will help toddler age 3-5 to learn, identify and recognize alphabets, numbers,

shapes, colors, animals and enrich their vocabulary skills. Whether you are parent or

kindergarten teachers, you can use the activities for preschoolers and kindergarten kids at

home or in class. Engage your toddlers in fun kids’ activities to keep them from doing

mischief because they are bored. Let them learn basic early education to picture such as

basic alphabets, numbers/counting, colors, shapes and memorization (ex. Body parts).

A Need to Develop a Software

In the millennium era technology where has been an extensive development of

mobile and computer games, children nowadays know how to play and interact with

android mobile games. The researchers think about how a child can learn in mobile

android mobile phone. The researcher thinks about the title of the Educational Game

which is “Little One’s Piece”. The researchers conducted an interview with the teacher at

National Child Development Center School (NCDC) and she said that a child in

millennium era is more active in school and she’s will be the one who will adjust to child

rather than the child will cope up to her. She will be the one who will associate to the

3
child so she can teach them well and the researchers also conducted a survey evaluation

to the parents and children which is among the 20 parents 16 of them said their child

uses mobile devices, which is equivalent to 80%,16 of the parents said that their child

know how to use mobile devices, which equivalent to 80% while parents who are

allowing their children to use mobile devices is 14 which equivalent to 70% and 8 of the

parents said that their child has their own mobile devices it is 40%, because nowadays,

mobile devices is one of the tool to reduce boredom of the child and a learning tool for

them while it is the way of parents to do their work. The developers compute the

percentage by (X/(Y*100))=%, which means Y is the number of parents who answered

yes in question, while X is the total number of parents.

Game design and development requires good knowledge of a programming

language. In creating Android Mobile Game Application, the one of the software tools for

creating android mobile game app is Game Salad which it’s visual drag and drop

interface and it has other cool features that make the game develop also Godot Engine

that supports 2D and 3D games and it support is far better. The 2D aspects of the engine

were carefully designed from the start, which means better performance, fewer bugs and a

cleaner overall work flow. It is for developing a game. The manual teaching system are

using chalk and talk, they are writing in board and the child will write and draw in the

paper, but the child has weak attention and short span of attention and to write compare to

the proposed system that when they use it, the child will be excited to trace and write

letters and numbers, identify and recognize objects, shapes, colors and animals, sing and

dance nursery rhymes. In the manual teaching system, the operation is the children at a

young age 3-5, they are not behaviorally developed and not eye catching to the child

4
causes of laziness not going to school. When they use the proposed system the child will

be excited to use. The operation in the proposed system will be fun, enjoyable and

attractive to child learning and nowadays every parent has an android mobile phone they

can easily download the game or Bluetooth and trough Share-It to one another.

Objective of the Proposed System

General Objective

To enhance memory skills of pre-schoolers through matching and mixing

objects with this mobile game.

Specific Objective

This study aims to meet the following objectives:

 To develop an interactive and user friendly interface app game for

android mobile.

 To build a mobile game that pre-schoolers could trace and write letters

and numbers to enrich vocabulary and arithmetic math skills.

 To create fun games that pre-schoolers could learn, identify and

recognize objects such as shape, colors and animals.

 To provide an entertainment game where pre-schoolers could sing and

dance with rhyme songs.

I.T Innovation

Lukas Hasik, 2018 stated that this screencast will show you how to create a Java

ME game using the NetBeans Mobile Game Builder and focuses on how to use the game

5
designer to create the visual components of a game such as sprites and tiled layers. This

demonstration is based on Lukas Hasik's hands on lab that was given at JavaOne.

The developers used new software technology which is game salad it’s visual

drag and drop interface and it has other cool features that make the game develop also

Godot Engine that supports 2D and 3D games and it support is far better. The 2D aspects

of the engine were carefully designed from the start, which means better performance,

fewer bugs and a cleaner overall work flow. It is for developing a game.

Rationale

The developers proposed this system to help the parents and teachers to teach the

basic learning tools even they are at home. To have an advanced learning tool at home we

conducted evaluation, observation and interview in some public kindergarten school. To

ask their opinions about what they child wants and what they want from they’re child. If

they want their child to use educational mobile game app as a basic learning tools.

Statement of the Problem

The problem in manual or chalk and talk is that the child has weak attention for a

significant period of time when the child is at home they forgot what the teacher taught

and the child is at the school they didn’t focuses on what teacher saying either they are

playing and talking to each other because they have short span of attention.

Objective of the Study

To develop an Android mobile app game for educational purposes.

6
Scope and Limitations

This study will be conducted only by toddlers ages 3-5 with features such

With the above and aforementioned reviews of related literature, the researchers

are highly persuaded that the proposed research study, which is to implement a game

adaption of mobile educational gaming, specifically the young learners from toddlers to

preschooler all the related literature have common features like letters, numbers,

counting, matching shapes, colors and animals. While the proposed system is much more

essential to preschool skills because it has the combination of all the related literature but

it is more child friendly, attractive features and the features that they don’t have is there

will be a quiz after the game and will give stars from good to excellent for their

achievements so that they will see if they are learning from the application.

RELATED STUDIES

In 2014 Peña-Miguel Noemí and Sedano Hoyuelos Máximo, said that for the

mobile game app entitled Educational Games for Learning, this paper reviews various

16
cases of successful serious games and their influence on the learning process, looks at

tutoring as the key to guiding the learning process throughout serious games and

considers what kind of abilities and skills can be achieved via such games. They are

designed in order to balance the subject matter with the game play and the ability of the

player to retain and apply said subject matter to the real world. Video games are not the

enemy, but the best opportunity we have to engage our kids in real learning process.

In 2009 Teixeira, said that for the mobile game app entitled Games as an

Engaging Teaching and Learning Technique: Learning or playing. The new technological

brought facility of access to communication by the increase of storage capacity of news

and by the processing speed of information in real time, promoting their educational

applications inside and outside classrooms.

Biggs (2003, p. 79) says; ‘Being active while learning is better than being

inactive’.

According to Peirce 2013, for the mobile game app entitled Digital Game-based

Learning for Early Childhood, there is an on-going debate as to whether young children

should be exposed to ICT as it can arguably detract from fundamental psychomotor and

socio-emotional development. The tablet and phone market for games in this area is large,

competitive, and dominated by low-cost products, however, the typical simplicity of the

games limits their development cost and there are opportunities for games with proven

learning effectiveness.

According to Rambli and Sulaiman 2013, for the mobile game app entitled Fun

Learning with AR Alphabet Book for Preschool Children, researches showed that fun

learning also increase the ability to memorize and understanding of the user. Flashcard is

17
one of the learning approaches to teach children the alphabet. The tangible manner of

flashcard introduces the interaction of learning therefore it could create the joyful

learning.

However, the potential of flash-card could be further enhance through the use of

AR technology. Therefore, introducing the use of AR could encompass fun learning since

AR offer rich media learning. Besides displaying each alphabet upon presentation of its

corresponding pattern marker, children have the options to see 3D models of objects that

begin with each alphabet character. Additional book features include pattern markers for

children to view animation of how each letter is drawn and jigsaw puzzle game for each

letter to test children understanding.

An informal study was conducted among 15 preschool children aged between 5-6

years old to examine user perception of the book. The preliminary results indicate the

children reacted positively towards the books; most reported they like and enjoy using the

AR book. Observation of the children behaviours during study corroborates this finding.

Most students requested to use the AR book repeatedly. These results suggest the

potential of AR book as a tool to create fun learning environment especially for preschool

children.

In 2015, Skelton and Atkinson stated that the mobile game app entitled Increasing

Children’s Working Memory Capacity in Schools: Preliminary Evaluation of A

Collaborative Card-Based Program, Working memory, particularly verbal working

memory, has long been recognized as foundational to children’s ability to learn. Research

has demonstrated that practice on computerized training programmes can increase

18
children’s working memory capacity. However, there are inherent difficulties which may

restrict these programmes application within the school context.

Rojo, Bagtaso and Caballero(2013) stated that the mobile game app entitled.

MOBILE EDUCATIONAL GAMES FOR TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS, in the

abundance of mobile application in the market, there is less availability of games

particularly for toddlers and preschoolers. The purpose of this study is to create

application that would cater the toddlers and preschoolers in terms of reading, spelling

mathematics. The system can help the children enhance their learning in the said areas of

the for its urgency and demand for the children in their early stage more specifically in

this age technology. The study aimed to check the effectiveness of the system in the

learning of the and preschoolers in using the mobile application as the base instrument of

learning and its approach on teaching.

SYNTHESIS

In above search about related studies the researches known about how can create a

mobile app for kids how will the study will be created the related studies is a study how

will be the kids will learn from the app in this age technology. The effectiveness of the

system in the learning of pre-schoolers in using the mobile application as the base

instrument of learning and its approach on teaching. Research about mobile app that fun

learning also increase the ability to memorize and understanding of the user. As the

researches studies same as their studies show will be the age technology now can use a

mobile app for learning. What’s the millennium era does for learning how they study and

how they learn. In above aforementioned related studies compare to the study of purpose

19
system the researches find a way that will they make the kids enhance their vocabulary

skills by developing the little one’s piece an android mobile app educational game.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY AND SOFTWARE DESIGN

Methods of Research (Methodology of the Study)

The developers started in choosing their group mates. They are required to choose

an adviser and think a good proposal title. Before the developers plan their title, they

thought who will be their adviser that can able to help them in making their capstone

project. After choosing their adviser the developers start brainstorming and come up with

many ideas. First, they thought of implementing system in boutique, at Poblacion South,

Solano, Nueva Vizcaya to be specific, but then the saleslady said that they already have

computerized system. Second, they try to ask at a barangay hall if they have or want to

have system that can help them to improve their paper works but then the same thing

happened. And after that, the developers choose to have educational mobile game

application. The developers conducted an interview to Ms. Grace Nanale, the school

Kindergarten Teacher and Parents of National Child Development Center of Solano, that

can able to improve their progressive teaching. After consultation to the user, the

developers asked permission to their adviser if the proposed title is feasible or not.

The developers started to work on the documents of the proposed system entitled

“Little One’s Piece Android Mobile Application Educational Game”. They conducted an

interview from Ms. Grace Nanale, the school kindergarten teacher to find out their

progressive teaching in their school and the problems she had encountered that would be

useful in the study. They have researched the background and history of the school for

comparison and basis in constructing the features of the system. They also discussed with

their parents who was also an IT student before and inquired some of his experiences

21
creating a software system and acquired some ideas on how to design the proposed

system. These gave them an idea on how to work with design of the user interface and

how data would be manipulated and managed in the database system.

Figure 3: Agile methodology

The Agile Method

A sprint is a period of time allocated for a particular phase of a project. Sprints are

considered to be complete when the time period expires. There may be disagreements

among the members of the team as to whether or not the development is satisfactory;

however, there will be no more work on that particular phase of the project. The

remaining phases of the project will continue to develop within their respective time

frames. The following phases of the selected model assume in figure 3 is explain as

follows:

22
Discover

The discovery of the system is collected by analyzing the needs of the user(s).

The developer conducted an interview with Ms. Grace Nanale, the school kindergarten

teacher to find out their current manual process in the school and the problems she had

encountered that would be useful in the study, they also gathered some data from their

current manual system and what’s the most favorite part of teaching of the children, they

search through internet some related studies in the system for basis in constructing the

features of the system and consultation from the adviser which every document was

checked when it’s done.

Design

The developers will design three interface meant for the game user interface. The

developers used the following for developing and implementing the proposed system.

Develop

The project team has one primary responsibility. That responsibility is to translate

the specifications created in the detailed design phase into technical code (whatever

platform or language). This will include the designing of the lines of codes for system

execution. Also, include the designing of the interface separately.

Test

System testing is most often the final test to verify that the system to be delivered

meets the specification and its purpose. Testing each component of the system if they

work properly then integrate them as a whole system to be tested using real-life data.

This then is tested again to make sure the requirements are met
