ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF POLYNOMIALS
Week No. 3

Objective: At the end of the session, learners should be able to perform addition and subtraction of
Polynomial.

POINTS TO PONDER:

Rule 1: Always take like terms together while performing addition or subtraction.

Guide Question:
“Paano mo ipinig ang tumpok sang prutas nga ara sa laragway para magkaangay sila tanan
kag indi maghalo-halo?”

Possible Answers:
 Isimpon ko sila basi sa ila kadakuon
 Itumpok ko ang magkapareho nga prutas
 Kuhaon ko ang dunot sa preska

In performing addition or subtraction, it goes the same way “COMBINE LIKE TERMS”. These are
the terms having alike or same in “LITERAL COFFICIENTS”.

For example;

-5x, 3x, 10x, -3x -------------------------- These terms has the same literal coefficient “x”.
2ab, 6ab, ab, -9ab ------------------------These terms has the same literal coefficient “ab”.
-4x2y2, -5x2y2, 8x2y2, -3x2y2 -------------These terms has the same literal coefficient “x2y2”.

In other words, you may only operate to add or subtract when they have the same literal
coefficient.
 Rule 2: Signs of all the polynomials remain the same in addition. While in Subtraction, the
signs of the subtracting polynomials change.

ADD POLYNOMIALS SUBTRACT POLYNOMIALS

Examples: Examples:
4x + 8x = 12x 4x - 8x → 4x + (-8x) = -4x
-16x + 12x = -4x -16 - 12x → -16x + (-12x) = -28x
8x + (-3x) = 5x 8x – (-3x) → 8x + (3x) = 11x
` 5y + 10y = 15y 5y – 10y → 5y + (-10y) = -5y
-16y + (- 5y) = -21y -16y –(- 5y) → -16y + 5y = -11y
-9xy + 3xy = -6xy -9xy – 3xy → -9xy + (-3xy) = -12xy

STEP 1 → COMBINE LIKE TERMS STEP 1 → Rewrite the subtraction as addition, and then
change all the signs of the terms in the subtrahend.

¿(3 x 2 +2 x ¿ ¿ 2)+ (−8 x−6 x )+(7+12)¿ ¿ ( 3 x 2−8 x+ 7 ) +(−2 x 2 +6 x−12)
