Exploring Pompeii
Pompeii is an ancient¹ city in Italy. More than 2,000 years ago, a
very strong volcano² destroyed the city. After that, no one saw the
city for many years. Then, in the 1700s (about 1,700 years later),
workers found the buildings and streets of Pompeii under the
ground. They worked hard to make Pompeii beautiful again. Now,
Pompeii is a popular place for international tourism. Every year more
than two million people visit Pompeii. They walk along the streets
and look at the ancient buildings. They look at old items like pots and
jewelry.
Tourists today go sightseeing in Pompeii. They enjoy learning
about the ancient city. Pompeii is very large. Before the volcano
happened, about 20,000 people lived in the city. They had a large
food market, a hotel, restaurants, and an outdoor theater. There
were many shops. Pompeii was next to the sea, and many ships
visited. The ships carried things from all over the world.
Now some people are worried about the future of Pompeii. Sun,
wind, rain, and pollution hurt the ancient buildings. In 2010, a
building fell down.
The Italian government³ tried to answer the complaints from
residents and tourists. They made plans to take care of the ancient
buildings. The European Union decided to spend millions of dollars

Many people these days live in cities. There are more jobs in the city, and shopping and social
services are more convenient. People can visit parks, theaters, and other places of interest.
But there are some good things about living outside of the city, too. Small towns are quiet and
peaceful; people know their neighbors. There usually isn't much crime in a small town, and the people
are more relaxed.
Often, older people enjoy these characteristics of a small town, but younger people don't. Young
people leave for the big city because they need jobs and because city life is more exciting. In many
