A Walk in the Lake District

Every year, many people visit the
Lake District in northwest England.
The area is famous for its beautiful
5
lakes, forests and mountains. The
highest mountains in England and
also the deepest bodies of water in
the country are in the Lake District.
With all this natural beauty, it isn’t surprising the Lake
10
District became a national park in 1951. A national park is
a place to protect carefully. There are rules so people can’t
destroy nature there. In 2017, UNESCO named the Lake
District National Park a World Heritage Site. In fact, it is the
most popular national park in the United Kingdom with
over 15 million visitors a year. Visitors often go walking up
mountains like Scafell Pike. At 978 metres, Scafell Pike is
15
the highest mountain in England. Are you looking for a nice
hike? Try this one.
1. Leave your car at Seathwaite Farm.

20 2. Follow the path for about 1.3 km to Stockley Bridge.

Before there were cars, people transported products
through the valleys on horses. In 1540, people built this bridge,
making it possible for the horses to cross the
narrow river. In 1969, floods nearly destroyed it, but it’s
25
still standing.
3. On the other side, you should go right to see a 31-metre-
high waterfall called Taylor Gill Force.
4. After making a short video of the waterfall, continue for
30
30 minutes up the hill to Sty Head. At the top, there is a
mountain lake called Styhead Tarn. You can go into the
water there.
5. Walk about 54 minutes through some narrow valleys to
35
Lingmell Col.
6. From Lingmell Col, the path turns left and you can see
Scafell Pike. You will probably reach the top in half an hour.
Take a jacket, because even on the warmest days of the
year it gets cool and windy.
40
7. Here, good boots are really important because going
down isn’t easy. First, go east and walk for 2.3 km, and then
the path turns left. Walk another 1.1 km. It takes one hour to
Sprinkling Tarn, home to the rarest fish in Britain – the
Vendace.
