This project proposal outlines modifying a DIY stepper motor-based CNC milling machine. A standard Arduino-compatible CNC controller board will be used as the base unit to operate the machine with G-codes. The electronic boards available for these platforms are intended for smaller stepper motors, so the motor driver section will need revisions. Software modifications may also be needed, along with a proper AC power supply circuit with battery backup. The success criteria is for the DIY CNC to be operable using software like Blender3D or FreeCAD to draw parts, convert to G-codes, download, and mill the parts within 3 months for under 2000TL.

Co-advisor Title of the Project Modification of a Stepper Motor Based Do It Yourself (DIY) type CNC Milling Machine Number of Teams (One or 1 more) Team Size 3 or 4 students Project Details A DIY type, non-standard stepper based CNC milling machine’s electro- mechanical parts exist to be adopted to new electronics and software. One of those standard CNC controllers board made for Arduino kind platforms will be used as a base unit. So that, CNC can be operated with G-Codes. (DIY milling machine electromechanical parts will be supplied by the Advisor) Many open source software tools are available to be used in this kind of platforms. But, the electronic boards available for this kind of platforms are generally intended to be used with smaller and may be for different kind of stepper motors. That’s why motor driver section of these motors will need some small revisions. Software modifications may also be needed. A proper power supply circuit running from AC outlet with a battery back-up is a must. Tools AVOmeter, Oscilloscopes, Soldering Iron, Mechanical mounting tools, Personal computer, CAD tools, C/C++/C#/ Python programming tools Success Criteria DIY CNC should be operable when the project is complete. User should use software like Blender3D, FreeCAD etc. to draw the parts. Convert the drawings to G-Codes, download and mill the parts. (Candidates are encouraged to submit their project to TUBITAK 2209B Programs) Cost Less than 2000TL Duration 3 months+
