AMT – 213 REPAIR 1 2020

AMT 213 VIRTUAL LABORATORY INSTRUCTIONS:

PREPARATIONS & MATERIALS:

1) Two (2) Al Sheet (t = 0.055 in x 0.055 in, *99% Al)
2) MARKER
3) L Square Rule
4) Steel Rule

WARNNG:

 Follow all the instructions from your instructor during virtual laboratory, this is to prevent
injury or damage.
 Before operating the equipment and tools, make sure that you know how to operate.
 Make sure all tools and equipment after using are off and disconnected from electrical
supply.
STEPS 1: Make a cross mark using L-Square, make sure its perfect square on the doubler. This is
to prevent the lay-out from asymmetry.
STEPS 2: Measure and draw 4 equal spaces, ref: Drawing.

STEPS 3: Measure and draw 12 equal spaces, ref: Drawing.

STEPS 4:
a. After you draw 4 x 12 equal spaces, select/mark a “+” on the location of each rivet, for
variation of rivet size pls ref to our drawing.

b. On your skin panel (other plate), repeat the same procedures to mark/draw with a cross
mark using L-Square, make sure its perfect square. This is to prevent the lay-out from
asymmetry. Draw a circular pattern, this will represent our damage (for the size, pls refer
to our drawing).
LEAVE IT AS BLANK PAGE
STEP 5: Prepare your tools & materials (The tools shown in our presentation might differ from
your tools).
Step 6: Get a center punch or equivalent to mark the center of the cross, this is to prevent your
drill bit while running from drill-run.
Caution: Make sure to exert very light force to the cross marking only.
STEP 7: After the marking, pls proceed with drilling process using “3/32-inch” drill bit. Drill the
plate/panel together (doubler + skin).
Caution: This is what we called pilot drilling to prevent from oversizing the holes & prevent
mistakes for the right size of rivet.
STEP 8: Check the holes after drilling.
STEP 9: Separate the plates from one another and check the quality of holes.

Caution: Prior separating the panels, make sure that you leave a permanent mark, this is to give
you an idea when you mate both panel again, esp., hole alignment.
STEP 10: After the visual inspection on the hole areas, remove all burrs after drilling, this can be done by
using bigger drill bit (at least 4x the size of the drill bit used). See the sample pictures on next page, before
and after removal of burrs.
Fig. A. Burr after drilling.

Fig. B. Burr removed – surface must be smooth.

STEP 11: Check all the surface and holes for burr-free-holes on the other side of the panels. Clean as
necessary.
STEP 12: After drilling, cut-out the damage as shown on the picture above using 1/8-inch drill bit. Drill
simultaneously until it may fell-off. Remove the damage as required.
STEP 13: After removing the damage, file to smooth the cut-out using half-round file. See next
page.
Caution: Make sure the cut-out is perfectly circle.
STEP 14: Check and fasten together using vice grip or cleco fastener.
STEP 15:
a. Cut the edge of the doubler plate and maintain the edge distance from the center of the
rivet line (ref. Drawing). Smooth as required.

b. Before finalizing the edge, make a chamfer as shown above in red oblong shape (ref.
Drawing).
STEP 16: Proceed to riveting using hand rivet squeezer, for the size of each rivet required pls refer
to our drawing. Check the condition of every rivet being driven. If you’ve found obvious damage
on the rivet after installation, replace as required.
