Dear Echo Lake team,

Hello, my name is Ian Burke, and I am thrilled to see a position open up at Echo Lake. Empathy and radical
compassion are both factors that drive the art that I create and the work I desire to have. Cooperation, being a part of
a team and being considerate and compassionate towards others’ experiences as they pursue their passions are all
actions that have pushed and motivated what I write about, the works I am drawn to, and the work I would like to do
in my career. Goal-oriented and easy to get along with, I consistently search for opportunities to develop as a person
within the workspaces I inhabit as well as my own inner space.

Experiences before and during college have given me a wealth of experiences that have developed both my writing and
who I am as a person in skill and personality. Before college, I was in a leadership position in the Boy Scouts for the last
three years of my time in the organization. Gaining the Eagle Scout award involved organizing a project that would
serve a local neighborhood or community. This project entailed a community donation in the form of constructing a
community space, involving the management of a $5000 construction budget and a workforce of twenty people at any
given time during the forty-day construction process, all of this done at 18 years of age. My experience in the Boy
Scouts gave me ample experience in leadership, communication, teamwork, and working within a non-profit
organization. In college, I was a Physics major until switching my majors to English with a concentration in Writing,
but despite the change, I learned and worked as a writer/copy editor in some capacity over all four years. First, as a
writer and later a copy editor for the Captain’s Log, a student-run newspaper, I oversaw penultimate edits and filled
the writer’s position on many articles, mainly surrounding comic books, movies, and television.

My academic experience ranged from writing and researching for Physics-oriented courses to literary criticism and
analysis of both authored or classical works and works by my peers. My time as a writer in college has afforded me
insight and experience with the professional writing world through a multitude of different courses, one in which I
wrote and illustrated an industry-standard children’s book that is seeking publication and one in which a poem of
mine was published in a literary magazine. My experience in journalism has given me an understanding of visual
media editing, AP and MLA formats, and the ability to quickly learn the unique format and style guide of a given media
site or publication. The experience has also given me the communication skills to notify writers of editing changes,
answer questions, or quickly adapt to new developments or the publication's needs. My professional experience in
writing has allowed me to hone my writing and editing skills and direct them for specific purposes. In my time as a
freelance writer, I have been contracted to write scripts for video productions, to undertake training in writing articles
reporting on comic books and multimedia news through Microsoft Office, Google office, and various job-specific
content management systems, as well as writing so that others may have a better life during my time writing for an
immigration law firm. Working for these companies and having a position working on film sets have given me a
precise working perspective, keen attention to detail, and exemplary communication skills. My experience in film and
medical office settings has given me skills in handling high-volume phones, conflict resolution, and customer service,
as well as a keen eye for detail and organizing busy schedules.

I believe this prior experience would make me a valuable asset to Echo Lake, so I was elated to see a position open up
there. Please do not hesitate to contact me at my phone number or email in the header. I would be more than happy to
answer any further questions for you. Thank you so much for your consideration in reading my resume!

I look forward to hearing from Echo Lake in the future!

Sincerely,

Ian M. Burke
