works facility
 A place/ enclosure where meat animals are killed for
human consumption as food products is technically
called ‘Abattoirs’.

Knackeries:
 Slaughter house of animals which process not meant
for human consumption are called knackeries or knack
yards.
 Such process may be meant to produce meat for
animals in captivity.
EXISTING CONDITION
 There are about 4700 authorized
slaughterhouses in India. These are
under the control of local municipal
administration. Besides, there are
some private slaughterhouses.

 In respect of facilities and

management, most of the slaughter
are in bad shape having temporary
or old civil structure with leaking
roof, poor ventilation and inadequate
light and water supplies.
 Sufficient lairages for livestock are lacking, clean and
unclean slaughter operations are carried out in the same
hole.

 In India, the scheme for provision of improved

slaughterhouses has not received enthusiastic support
from the public bodies, as the expenditure on their
construction and hygienic management far exceeds the
revenue.

 In India, animals are not raised specially for meat purpose

that involves improved feeding and managemental
practices.
 Most often, rejected and culled animals are slaughtered
for meat purpose.

• One drawbacks of the Indian meat industry is the

butchers/ workers engaged in the slaughterhouses and
meat processing plant are not properly trained.

• No restriction in the movement of unauthorized persons

and entry of the stray dogs at the site of slaughter in the
abattoirs.
