Introduction

Singapore Changi Airport

Singapore's largest airport is an experience not to be missed, as it is always ranked as one of

the best in the world. Whether you wait for some, or get into Singapore, there is always
something to be done, within its four dimensions. The prestige of Changi Airport begins
immediately, with their concept of fast and seamless travel embedded within the automated
systems of self-defense, packing and boards a plane once there you can hear the many
shopping and entertainment experiences offered at the airport. Satisfy your craving for
shopping even before you get to town, with some of the less-efficient shops in town selling
everything from cosmetics and alcohol to luxury watches and fashion accessories.

Challenges Changi Airport tackles to be the No. 1

1. Long passenger walking distances

Singapore changi airport is a huge airport and with the escalator there is a huge walking
distance for the passengers to cover. Passenger walking distances is something changi has
improved on a lot through the past years. Walking distance can effect arriving, departing and
transfer passengers as the passengers has to walk a certain long distance through the terminals
which could cause delays and missed flights for these passengers. This is basically not
desired by the management of the airport and always work on a solution to fix these issues
witch modernized services and others.

To reduce the time pressure changi airport always look for possible ways to minimize
walking distances of their checking and check out gates and to the baggage claim area.
Moreover the airport has installed running flat escalators which is technologically fast and
easier ways for the passengers to travel.

2. Limited check-in time before departure

With over 65 million passengers passing through this terminal by visiting or transiting in
changi it’s prone for the passengers to get lost on the shopping malls of changi or through
sightseen of the memorable monuments here. Passengers rush to check-in counters at a short
time period. This cause a temporary congestion in the check-in area. This is hard for the
management to secure for they don’t want any flight delays due this or any other factors.

Changi management tries their best to hold their number one airport at all cost and reduce all
the outcomes from challenges they face. To reduce the small flight delays the airport avoids
using time for passenger ticketing on the check-in counters at all costs and they try to provide
kiosks to be used by the passengers.

3. Late arrival of bags at the baggage claim facility

There are many issues associated with baggage handling. One of the biggest issue noted is
The late arrival of bags causing congestion in baggage claims areas which is often
problematic. There are many different factors that cause this issue such as, the number of
passengers, number of bags per passenger, baggage flow and delays, passenger Queuing, and
baggage queuing. Congestion is one of the most common problems which exist Surrounding
the arrival of baggage onto terminal carousals due to the gathering passengers at the baggage
claim area. are a number of things done to tackle the problems offered such as modifying the
airports architecture in a way that follows IARA and FAA standards and using baggage
handling specialists at the area. Moreover, the airport management has planned and been
planning to make researches and consulting with baggage handlers and airlines while
designing and upgrading the facility area.

4. The variety of aircraft sizes

With different size of jets and crafts landing in the airport the size of the planes that land at
the same time causes issues to the gate handlers. For example, when Gate A1 aims to pack a
specific aircraft or size, such as the Boeing 747, Gate A2, the neighboring A1 gate, will not
accommodate an aircraft as large as the Airbus 340 as these two aircraft have different sizes
and theirs. The management made rules such as gates for servicing different aircraft,
designers and designers must design them for the expected major aircraft.
To give the proper shape to the aircraft, the length of the body of each aircraft and the height
of the wings must be taken into account. The terminal apron gate types can be distinguished
according to their geographical locations for the four aircraft groups: gate types are grouped
into A, B, C, and D (FAA Advisory Circular, 1988).

5. Unassigned turns; gates may not be available

Assigning secondary gateways may be problematic in some cases, note that some types of
gates are called terminal gates. LIFO gates are defined as two neighboring gates, Gate 1 and
Gate 2 for example, often unable to accommodate two gateways based on a gate problem.
Sitting on the right side, Gate 2 cannot be used to park an airplane, or an airplane parked at
gate 2 will not depart if there is an airplane parked at gate 1, even if it is free. The status of
the LIFO gate did not become such an issue for researchers. Airport gates may not be
available for regular flights. To reduce the low customer satisfaction air carriers are notified to
wait until the gate is available or borrow gate from some other airlines. Although changi
management does not prefer these methods. (Opensiuc.lib.siu.edu, 2019)

Check-in and Check-out

In summary the changi airport check-in and check in procedures are as follows. If you have
not checked in online and printed your boarding pass, or if you have luggage to check, you
have to go to a check-in desk. In Changi, each airline has its own check-in desks, so look for
your airline in there. As you enter the departures area, there are screens listing
departing flights and the check-in area allocated to each. Follow the signs to get to the right
check-in area.

Once you have your boarding pass, look for the signs for departure gates. This will take you
through Security and, if necessary, outbound Passport Control. Look for the screens showing
outbound flights and their gates, and go to the correct gate.

On arrival, follow the signs for luggage collection and exit. This will take you through
inbound Passport Control (if necessary), then luggage collection area, then Customs (if
necessary).

For the journey, you should have your luggage (if any) checked through. For transit
passengers follow the signs for transit passengers, and look for departure screens showing the
gates. Follow the signs for the relevant gate, and this will take you through any extra Security
required for the necessary flights

Check-in procedure

1. Wrap all the luggage, including the handheld luggage, in accordance with the safety
guidelines.
2. The first thing to do when you get to the airport is to check out the Flight Information
Display movies to find out where your airline comes from.
3. Next, check your travel documents, valid passport, airline ticket or booking
confirmation, and visa
4. Before leaving the information counter, make sure that you have a valid passport and
that your travel documents are in order.
5. If all is well organized, state your expenses and proceed to the Flow Hall.
6. Passengers should try to visit the front gate of the gate for checks! Check your airline
information bonuses at the airport for new information about flights and your gate.
Please note that no boarding calls will be made.

Check-in Options
- Online check-in

Depending on your airline, you may be able to save some time at the airport by checking
online up to 48 hours before your flight.

- Fast Check-in

Enjoy shorter queues and more flexibility at automated check-in kiosks and bag drops with
Fast and Seamless Travel

- Early check in
- Group check-in

If you are traveling with a group of 10 or more people, ask your airline if they have a special
account to interfere with their designated lines.

Security Screening

In terminal 1, 2 and 3, security checks are done at the gates. In position 4, the security
operation is performed after immigration. You are asked to undergo a security screening and
have your fingerprints taken via X-ray.

Steps:

1. Prepare passport and boarding pass for inspection at the gate

2. Place electronics, metallic items in septate tray and liquid on other tray
3. Remove all the outer wear such as hats and shoes
4. Place the hand carried luggage in the conveyor
5. Proceed through the walkthrough metal detectors

Impact of Low Cost Airlines to the management of the Airport

There a part of positive and negative impacts to the management of Singapore Chang Airport
due to low cost Airlines. Firstly, the intensification of traffic volumes may have direct
positive impacts on airports incomes from commercial non-aeronautical exercises, the
competitive environment faced by the airport is one of the pressure to decrease airline
charges. Although this may negatively influence airports financial performance, it may too
lead to the rebuilding and the streamlining of airport activities, so that they can be more
closely balanced with the specific needs of low cost airline. It is one of the best way airport
may be profited from decreasing the costs and productivity improvements. The low cost
airlines are able of expanding the number of passengers to the airport, costs and necessary
productivity improvements. The most common issue at Changi, however, may be runway
instead of terminal blockage. Over the last several years, low cost airlines have accounted for
nearly all the development at Changi Airport. As LCCs basically work narrow body airplane,
this has led to higher development in airplane developments than passenger movements. As a
result, taxi times have expanded steadily and it is now common during peak periods for
airplane to line for takeoff at Changi for over 30 minutes. There are now at least 40 hourly
movements at Changi from early morning to late at night with the only special case of a brief
quiet period within the late morning. The biggest peak is within the late evening and early
evening, when there are 50 or more hourly commercial airplane movements planned. (CAPA

A major factor contributing to the strong development in LCC traffic has been the
liberalisation of air service understandings between Singapore and its ASEAN neighbors,
with traffic development most articulated on divisions to and from Malaysia and the
Philippines. A few of the LCCs that have been registering development at Changi incorporate
Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia and the Air Asia Group.(Henderson, 2017)

Connectivity could be an issue as increasingly low cost airlines are seeking after codeshares
and interlines with full service carriers; one later one is between Jet Airways and Jetstar.
Connectivity issues with the potential fifth terminal on the east side of Changi, be that as it
may, can be overcome through rail or road links. If Changi chooses to build a new terminal
on the east side, connections can be possibly offered through a tunnel interfacing the two
sides of the airport. A new airside link is additionally expected for T4, although Changi has
not however given details (the current Budget Terminal only incorporates a landside bus
link). (CAPA - Centre for Aviation, 2019)

At Changi Airport, LCCs operate at Terminal 1 and the Budget Terminal. To accommodate
more LCC traffic, the Budget Terminal, which opened in March 2006, was expanded in 2009.
The terminal can presently handle seven million passengers per annum, up from 2.7 million
already. The number of check-in counters was expanded from 18 to 25 and there are now 10
passenger boarding doors, from the first seven. Including to passenger comfort and
convenience, the canopy at the takeoff and arrival halls, as well as that along the link way to
the taxi stand, was expanded to supply more protect from the sun and rain. The open corridor
from the arrival entryway to the arrival hall has also been air-conditioned. (International
