Hindu Seva Pratishthan

Late Sri Ajit Kumar, a gold medallist in both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering branches, graduated from University Vishweshwaraiah College of Engineering, Bangalore. He founded the Hindu Seva Prathishthana in 1980 and was its founder Director. He was born on 27th Aug 1934. Sri Bramha Suraiah, father and Smt. Putta Tayamma, mother, hailed from the village Gudibande in the vicinity of Bangalore. He had been a great social worker with many innovative social experiments to his credit. His unique style of functioning was based on Concern for all, attachment to none. He was often called a saint in a hurry. After his graduation in 1957, till his last breath in 1990, he was a full time social worker and a bachelor. It is unfortunate he succumbed to a road accident early in his life(56 years). The legendry yogacharya Shri. B.K.S. Iynger and Shri. Pattabhi Jois were his mentors and thus he became an authority on yoga and being an expert in the field. Besides taking up Homeopathy introduced by Dr. Krishnamurthy, he showed great interest in Psychology, Accountancy, Anatomy and such other disciplines. He loved excellence in all the walks of life. HSP is his brain child.

YOUTH FOR SEVA

There is a growing desire among the youth in India to volunteer their time and talent for community development. But most of them are not currently involved in volunteering work because of three major reasons: 1. Not knowing where to start. 2. The fear that it may be too much of responsibility. 3. Concern that it cannot be done with their limited time availability. Youth for Seva(YFS) was formed in April 2007 to fill this gap so that youth with an intention to volunteer and with different time commitments can easily find meaningful opportunities to serve the community.

Mission of YFS
The mission of YFS is to inspire youth to volunteer, connect them to the grass roots projects, and provide ongoing support and training to the volunteers and the NGOs.

Youth for Seva is a project of the Hindu Seva Pratishthana.(www.hinduseva.org), which has been in the forefront of social service for nearly three decades.

YFS is privileged to have many prominent people on its advisory board who have been guiding the youth and providing support. YFS is also proud to have a very dedicated team of volunteers in the executive board .

Ways to volunteer
Youth for Seva offers various options to the youths with varying time commitments.

Few months after graduation and before starting your professional career-Volunteering provides true-to-life experience and also helps you develop better communication skills and leadership qualities. If you volunteer for three months or more, you are eligible for a fellowship (stipend). For few hours every week throughout the year you can be associated with one or more projects closer to your home or college.

Semester breaks-Here you can volunteer full time for 10 days or more. Your time will be utilized based on your interests and abilities. Remember that the longer you volunteer, the better are the fruits of service. We can assist Master of Social Works (MSW) students in doing their project work with credible NGOs. Non-field work- You can help us with your writing, photo and video skills, graphics work and/or website development. Just let us know your areas of specialization and we will try to find ways to help the NGOs which share the same interests. Something that every one can do is subscribe to our enewsletter. Give us your email-id and you will receive our monthly e-newsletter. Your email address will remain confidential.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS..

Getting encouraged and inspired by these thoughts we three began our journey to find an NGO that could help us in meeting out this opportunity. When we got the project we spent a couple of days in deciding which NGO to work for because none of the NGOS were ready to accept our proposal to work for 25 hours. Almost every NGO was willing that we should work for them for the span of 3months. Then eventually we got the acceptance from a very reputed NGO called HINDU SEVA PRATISHTHANA. The co-oridinator, Mr. VENKATESH MURTHY, after a prolonged discussion and verifying our certificates agreed with us to give us the permission to work for them in their YOUTH FOR SEVA project. He informed us about the location, timings of the venue where the project was carried out. It was situated in the core area of Yehlanka, inside the campus of NITEE MEENAKSHI ENGINEERING COLLEGE. It was a huge campus with a lot of greenery all around. We with other group members arrived there by changing three buses. It was a hectic journey but then we know that hard work pays off well. As we reached there we found our project head Mrs. Soumya waiting for us to show us the right venue where the activities were supposed to be carried out. We saw a lot of campaigning done and the area showed signs of the presence of the RSS political party of Maharashtra carrying out their

social activities in a dedicated way by spending a handsome amount of money. Later as we spoke to the group members we came to know that it was an all state NGO MEET where more than 1300 NGOs had come there to have a meeting to support all the social causes for the disabled as well as poor people living in the remote and calamities affected areas where there are no helping hands. There were almost 700-800 delegates from every state and most numbers hailed from Maharashtra as it is the origin place. We were very excited and were waiting for a to help and contribute to the needs of people present there. But before we could start our contribution Mrs. Soumya explained us the different in which this SEVA organization has helped people in difficult periods. It was also interesting to know the remedies that the organization has founded to bring an improvement in the quality of life of disabled people. As this was our first time in the NGO we were quite flabbergasted by the environment of the engineering college where we realized that this project is something big as we could see huge accommodations for the delegates who had come from different states. There were fleet of cars standing in the play grounds of the college and each and every class was provided with the accommodation of the delegates. We too had an accommodation for that night in one of the boys hostel out there as we were told that we have to stay there that night as Bangalore is too far to go back again and come back the other day.

Our next move was towards the mess where we were surprised to see the amount of food that was being cooked for the delegates who had come there. Then to our surprise we heard that the food that was being cooked had to be served by us only along with the volunteers of other NGOS who had come there respective projects. We were divided into the groups of ten people each group had to look after a particular row of the dining table. The instructions were very well given in different languages about how to serve the food to the delegates. We were finding it very tiring procedure but then we knew that it was always going to be interesting. The plates were arranged and people entered the hall and along with our respective leaders we were told to serve the food in each and every plates kept there. We were strictly told not to touch the serving spoon on the plates of the people who were having the food. Then after the food was served the delegates entered the hall and took their places according to their ranks in the political arena. Then all of us were asked to stand on the side and recite prayers before consuming the food. After the prayer was over we began serving food and this was an indication for people to start eating their meals. The whole process of serving took about two hours since there were more 20000 people to be served. The entire work was divided so we did not feel so much pressure in serving the food.

After serving the food and getting exhausted we sat to eat and started enjoying food as after working hard everyone enjoys the food.

As all of us are humans at the end of the day we rested for half an hour and then Mrs. Soumya ordered us to replace around 100 flowerpots from outside the ground to the exhibition which was to be held the next day and to our surprise that was our next assignment. We were allotted one room with delegates of north assam and Kanpur. We had a healthy conversation with them and we came to know more about the strategies and their future palns. We were excited to stay together in the rooms of hostel. We did a lot of disturbances in the room due to which the delegates a bit angry but that was fun. After some time we all slept. Next day we had to wake up early because there was no water in the bathrooms and we were forced to have bath in the next building and do all other stuff. We were late because the other team members had not woken up and we were like a team and we all had to go together for the management of exhibition. After all were ready we went to the dining hall tohave breakfast but to our utter surprise it had finished and the reason for that were the delegates. Now our one and only substitute was the college canteen. We went to the canteen and had our breakfast which was more like a hostel food. We made good friends in the canteen because the engineering students out there were sociable and we had a healthy conversation with them. After having breakfast there we were told the full agenda of the day including the activities that need to be carried out by each and every individual.

There were various activities like handling the visitors in the reception, sitting in the reception and taking the feedback from all the local as well outside visitors in the exhibition. The other people were given the tasks like writing up pages, giving explanations to people who came in for the exhibition. There were many people who did come but they did not know a lot about the exhibition. So we were the ones to help them. There were a lot of pages that we wrote that would indicate what is being told in the exhibition.

It was good experience altogether to receive feed backs from people to came there and we were enjoying every bit of it. There was a period when very less public was there so we got a free time to relax our muscles and talk to each other sharing each others experience.

We went in for a photo shoot session where we thought that the pictures would help us make our report in a better and an attractive way. There was another reason why we wanted to take the pictures were that this experience was something that had to be shared in future as well and it was a good way of going back to the memory lane.

After the photo shoot session we decided to get back to our work and with full dedication we continued the work. Having worked there at the reception for a long time we got the affirmation to go and have our

lunch . The lunch provided by them was awesome and it was free also as we were engaged in social activities we had an advantage. After the lunch there were a lot of pending activities because it was the time for some renowned VIPs to visit the exhibition. We were told to be strictly formalized and sincere in our activities after it was the matter of the reputation of the YFS group. Soon after lot of cars started arriving and it seemed that they were those VIPs which we were told about. They too had that personality and we greeted them well and provided them with all the information they needed about the exhibition. They took a keen interest in the exhibition and gave us the assurance that they will look forward to the various social activities which will help the poor and needy people. After their whole wandering in the exhibition we took a constructive feedback from them by letting them fill the forms and provide their contacts and address so that we could be in touch with them in the future. Now it was really becoming tiring for us because we working since morning and its not a easy job to attend this many people from various backgrounds at a single time. Then we were told by the project head that the closing ceremony is after 1 hour and we took a sigh of relief then. We all were happy because we had to go back to Bangalore after 1 hour and we were tired very badly. Then came the closing ceremony where Mohan Bhagwat, the head of RSS party came and gave a good speech and told that his party will

definitely contribute for the victims of rural villages and provide them funds for the upliftment those rural areas. Next day on Monday we had to go to work for the NGO as our 5 hours were remaining and we had to complete that in order to get the qualifying certificate. After the college we went to HINDU SEVA PRATISHTHANS main office and had a talk with the NGOS head and e told us that our efforts were really awesome the other day and he also told us that we had some small work and that we had to go to a place and meet some delegates and exlain the same thing as we did in the exhibition yesterday and tell them all about the various taken up by the YFS group. We set out for the place in auto and reached there after 20 minutes. Then we met some people who were the delegates who had missed the exhibition due to some reasons. We did the same thing as we did the other day. It was again a revision type of thing for us and now we were getting bored but we cant ignore it also because we were on the verge of completing the project. After two hours we were told to go back to the office again and we set out for it. The person who took us to the place pointed out some places on the way and told us that these are the various small NGOS where some volunteers come and do their projects. So after requesting him a lot he finally agreed to our request and we told the auto wala to stop in the middle only. We got down there and then went inside one of the NGO.

It was not as big as the main office of HINDU SEVA PRATISHTHAN but we found it amazing. We saw people helping some children in carrying out their activities. Those children were divided into groups. Some were orphans and some were those children who were physically challenged. We sent around 2 hours with them and we also contributed in helping them by serving them food and playing indoor games with many. It was good experience playing with kids who were also happy when they saw some outsiders coming and interacting with them. After this we went back to office and there we saw the head Mr. Venketesha murthy in his office. We waited there for half an hour and then he called us. He was very much amused with our work and dedication which we showed in the exhibition. We were having talks with him then the person who went with us came into the office and told about our work in the orphanage, Mr. venketesha was amused by hearing this and he agreed to give us the certificates. He gave us the envelope which had the certificates, we thanked him and gave him the assurance that in the near future we will surely help their NGO whenever they will require.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Saurabh Agrawal As a learning experience, the NGO project contributed a lot towards my personal growth and development. It made me come face to face with realities that we experience everyday, but we are not ready to accept as a part of our lives. On a general note the project was a very broad one that could have ranged from an idea based community service to people based service. Our effort, though centered around a project named youth for seva and the issues that the rural people had to face everyday, it did teach us a lot in other aspects as well, cause during the course of our interaction with the elderly at, we were fortunate enough to be able to share a part of the experiences of some of the many time tested beings. At times we were not so welcome and at times it seemed as an extension of our daily lives, but on the whole it taught us a lot and I would not be exaggerating it if I say that the project benefitted us more than the society in terms of

immediate results, cause to say the truth we did not do much other than just give company to, and spend some time with political delegates. I could not forget the first day of our NGO activity when I went to yehlanka on a bike and my other group members by bus. It was an awesome experience going this far by bike. As I reached there we were told to serve foods to thousands of people present there. This was my first time serving food to delegates of these many states. Then after serving food e realized how good and satisfactory It felt by serving people. We had the food there only and we were allotted rooms in one of the hostels there, for one night I felt that we too are in hostel. It was really a nice experience living for a night and sharing room with delegates whom we never knew. Whole night was fun as we talked a lot about the activities that we did the whole day starting from Bangalore to yehlanka then serving food to people and then arranging things for exhibition which was our next task to be held the next day. We arranged quite a few flower pots and many other things displayed in the exhibition. And the whole day was too tiring and we were asleep.

Next we woke up late and found that the beakfast was already over and we had to eat in the college canteen, it revived my memories as I too was in hostel for 10 years. That experience of eating in mess can never be forgotten. Then we had to take care of the exhibition activities. I was allotted the task of sitting at the main entrance of the exhibition at reception counter and taking the feedback from all the delegates of all states as well as the local visitors who had come to visit the exhibition. It

was good talking to different people of different backgrounds at one place and taking their feedback. We were also told to tell the delegates to fill the feedback form and distribute the brochures to all of them which had a descriptive information of our project named YOUTH FOR SEVA. It was awesome experience sitting on the main entrance and doing a responsible job, an it was first of its kind. We sat there for around 6 hours then we had lunch on the same dining hall where we had served those people. Then we were informed that some VIPS will be joining us shortly to visit the exhibition and we have to provide them with full information about it. We had a healthy talk with all the VIPS who came there and after which they left and the coordinator of the exhibition told us that it was really a good job and thanked us for our continued support. Then we took permission from him and we left from yehlanka towards Bangalore. We were extremely tired and as I reached my flat I slept because the next we had to again go to the NGO because our 8 hours were remaining and we had to complete those in order to get our certificates. The next day I went to Basavanagudi to take the certificates from the mam but she was not there but the good thing was that she left the envelope with the certificates for us . I thanked Soumya mam for her effort and helping us throughout.

Though I cant really measure the accomplishment of our objective, we can say this for sure, that it added to our being as a person and if nothing else, it will help us to be better and more compassionate beings. It may sound clichd and I might not be even be able to do it for all I know, but we are sure our hearts would be satiated if we continue to visit those people who taught us a lesson in compassion.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: shobhit yadav The minute I heard that we had to work in an NGO I wasnt really happy but the minute I started working with the NGO, I started liking it because we all are a part of the society and at some point of time we all should pay back to the society in some form so I decided to work with an Old age home. The whole experience was really informative and I discovered the darker side of the society that I wasnt aware of before doing this project. Working in an NGO was something I always wanted to do and Christ University provided me with the opportunity to take up the same. Though I had already been to an NGO when I was in school but there wasnt enough quality time. This SRP really helped in transforming my attitude towards the society. I always felt that working for the society is pointless but after working, there has been a transformation in the way I used to think. It was a half day at college and the next day was a holiday. I received a call from Saurabh, just after college, he told me to reach Yalhanka at

5PM and also told that we had to stay there at night and return on the, next day in the evening.

I rushed to my place, took my blanket & clothes, and took an auto to Dairy Circle. After reaching there I took a bus till Majestic bus stand. Yalhanka lies in the outskirts of Bangalore and it takes around one and a half hour to reach there from my place. My friend Ujjwal was also going with me. After reaching Majestic I took another bus till Yelhanka. It was a long journey and finally we reached Yelhanka. I thought that the journey is over but we received a call from Soumya Maam saying that we had to reach at Bablur gate which was a little far from there. We reached there and saw a white SUMO waiting for us , it had a flag on which Aum was printed, we took that and reached the NGO. When I reached there I found seven of my classmates already there. Soumya Maam offered us tea, and told us to take a stroll of an exhibition which was also there. We did that and I got know about the various NGOs running throughout the country.

Then we got our first task from Soumya Maam . We were asked to serve food to the people who came for a three day event at the NGO. We had many people to assist us in doing so. I was surprised to see all of us really enthusiastic about the whole task we got. We did that really fine and then after some time we were told to take our dinner as well.

That was the best time we all shared our experiences about the whole thing. Then maam told us to help her in decorating the exhibition by putting the pots of plants. We did that and it was quit tiring, then were told to go. A room was arranged for us in which already some people were there. Then we went to sleep, after reaching the room.

Next morning we got up late and missed our breakfast. We went to the canteen to have some food .We had a little problem in getting ready in the morning as the bathrooms were not clean and we were not used to it.

Then we reported straight to Soumya maam. She gave us all different tasks to do, and all related to the exhibition. I and Ujjwal took up the writing work, and wrote about several NGOs , those scripts were also displayed in the exhibition. The other people took the reception work or presentation work. Mohan Bhagwat an eminent personality of the RSS was the chief-guest , it was great experience for me to meet him in person. Then we all were asked to have lunch . I found the lunch very delicious. Then we all having completed our hours asked to leave from Soumya maam . We underwent the long bus journey once again.

My experience would be incomplete if I dont thank Christ University because they are the one who gave me this opportunity to explore a very much different part of the society. I would like to conclude that it was a joy ride and very humbling experience.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: ujjwal garg As a part of our social responsibility project we were asked to work in an NGO for 25 hours. We as a group decided to do our 25 hours of volunteering in an hindu seva pratisthan which is located near the college. It was a Saturday afternoon when after college saurabh told me that we were supposed to go to the NGO for the completion of our project. I hurriedly went home, got ready and left my place to meet my group members in front of the Forum. When I met saurabh I was told that we were going to spend the night there at the Ngo itself. For a moment or two I was held back but then I thought that it would be a very a good experience along with our project being completed. I headed towards my home again and packed my bag and other requirements for the night and the next morning. I took my certificate provided by the CHRIST UNIVERSITY and started my journey.

I straight away went to the dairy circle with my group member, shobhit and waited there for the bus to Majestic from where we took the bus to Yehlanka. It was a long journey and I knew that we would be sleeping late at night so I had a small nap in the bus itself. Having completed the journey of 2 hours till Yehlanka we got the call from Mrs.Soumya that we were supposed to reach the banglure gate. Having waited there for half an hour we saw a white sumo waiting for us in which oms flag was flying. We sat in the car and entered the NITTE ENGINEERING COLLEGE which was located in the core area of Yehlanka. The campus was huge and we could see students roaming about in the campus which made me feel that wow, what a life since we do not get a hostel for boys in CHRIST UNIVERSITY. When we were assigned works I thought that it would be tiring and at one point of time I thought of not doing it but then on the other hand I was finding it interesting . the feel of serving food to the delegates was out of the box because to be honest I had never served before and now when I was serving there were thousands of people. Having served the food we sat down to have our dinner and really liked the food as it is quite obvious that after a hard work anything we eat we like it. No sooner did we start resting than we got the orders to replace the flower pots from outside to the inside of the hall. I never thought that after having a good dinner I would be doing this work but then work is work so I neglected the negative vibes that were coming to my mind.

Having done this work of replacing pots we went to our accommodations and lied there straight away without a second thought. But this was not the end of it . we knew that we worked long and sleeping without any mood refreshment would not have been good so all of us started sharing our experiences with each other and then we had a gala time talking about other things that we friends generally do.

RECOMMENDATIONS
After working in youth for seva project for 25 hours these are the suggestion we would like to make to the management of the HINDU SEVA PRATISHTHAN .These suggestions are based on our experience of interacting with the volunteers and our observations.

The people of the NGO are really nice but they should make sure that when they are taking the volunteers into certain outside project then they shold make necessary arrangements so that the volunteers can reach to the destination without facing any problem. We are saying this because we faced a lot of difficulty in reaching our destination as we were told just the name of the engineering college where we had to reach.

The NGO can have talks with institutions like Christ and get students to volunteer and organize activities in their project as it cheers up the students and also provides a learning opportunity to the youngsters.

The organization should also make sure that they give chances to as many college students as possible because in the beginning we found it difficult to join the NGO because the minimum

requirement to work there for was 3 months and we had to work for 25 hours. My suggestion is that they should invent small projects also so that peole like us can get a good opportunity in working and gaining a lot from these social activities.

Apart from these general suggestions that are suggested above, we would like to say that the NGO is run in a very efficient and well maintained way. All the things are very well communicated and the staffs or members out there are very dedicated to their various projects and they achieve their objective also. We had good experience working with such a huge project YOUTH FOR SEVA and it would not have been possible if Mrs. Soumya had not recommended us to the project head. We would also like to thank the owner of the NGO who allowed us to give us the certificates for 25 hours of work as it was not on their criteria and it was against their rules, but it was his gratitude towards us that he considered our project and granted us the permission for working there. Nowadays youngsters hardly pay any heed to the wounds of people but organizations like YFS are instigating the warm blood to show the talent by helping people. It is through YFS only that youngsters who are really interested in doing social activities for the society and the poor can do it

according to the wishes because the projects designed by YFS are such that youth can only participate in it. I would like to suggest that once in a lifetime a man should live for another man.

CONCLUSION
Doing a social activity is not at all opposed by anyone and no one will ever refuse you from doing that. This being the first experience for the three of us working in NGO we all learnt a lot and we also got to see the realities of life. People need help and by helping others for a good cause is not a wrong thing to do. These 7 days that we spent their will always be days the four us will look back to in life just for the valuable lessons and experiences. As an conclusion I would like to thank the college for having this project as a part of our curriculum as it helped each of individually. Having done this project we hereby infer that no matter was a hectic process overall but we got the opportunity to help the needy and register our names in the good book of god.

Because service to man is service to God
