TIMELINE TO INTERIOR DESIGN OF TODAY
Rooted in the post war aftermath is the ballooning need of reconstructions in the
inbuilding and interiors, by that time then Interior design in under the field of Architecture.
Basically, interior design is not a regulated profession by this time, and anyone who is passionate
on designing their interiors, and the one who provides lighting, furniture, and upholstery, carpets,
and curtains are termed as “Interior Decorators” despite not having a formal knowledge or
training in the field.
The introduction of interior design emerged from several Architecture graduates who
seek to specialize, and pursuit advance Interior design studies in the United States. Later on
become more specialized through Filipino architects from foreign country which is highly trained
in the field of interior design, the pioneers; Ched Berenguer Topacio, Edith Oliveros, Sonia
Santiago Olivares, Lor Calma, Edgar Ramirez, Antonio Viriña, Myrna Cruz and Antonio Zamora,
among others, efforts to introduce interior design through regular showroom displays, with this,
along with the post-war reconstruction boom and expansions with Central Manila and Pasay, to
elevate the field of interior design professional regulation are called to enforced to make the
practice respectable and dignified field in the allied professions.
Republic Act No. 8534: An Act Regulating the Practice of Interior Design in the Philippines
The interior design profession was first regulated by the Specialty Board of Interior Design
created by and under the Board of Architecture through Board Resolution No. 21 series of 1982.
Practice of Interior Design – “The practice of interior design is the act of planning,
designing, specifying, supervising and giving general administration and responsible direction to
the functional, orderly and aesthetic arrangement and development of interiors of buildings and
residences that shall contribute to the enhancement and safeguard of life, health and property
and the promotion and enrichment of the quality of life.”

An act to regulate and modernize the practice of the interior design in the Philippines,
repealing for the purpose republic act numbered 8534, otherwise known as "an act regulating the
practice of interior design in the Philippines", appropriating funds therefor and for other purposes
According to the Republic Act, the statement Policy are defined as “The State recognizes
the important role of the interior design profession in nation building. Towards this end, the State
shall promote the sustained development of professional interior designers, whose technical
competencies have been determined by honest and credible licensure examinations and whose
standards of professional service and practice are internationally recognized and considered
globally competitive, brought about by regulatory measures and human resource programs and
activities that foster their professional growth and advancement”.
