NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ROURKELA - 769 008

End Semester Examination 2020-21(Autumn)

B. Tech. 5th Semester , May- 2021
Subject: Reinforced Concrete Design (CE- 3203)
Full Marks: 50 Duration of Exam: 2 Hours

Answer two questions from Group A and two questions from Group B.
Group A carries 20 marks and Group B carries 30 marks.
IS 456-2000 is permitted in the Examination.

Group A
Q1a. What do you mean by (a) balanced section, (b) under reinforced section and (c) over
reinforced section? Explain their characteristics in terms of depth of neutral axis, moment of
resistance.

b. Determine ultimate moment capacity and the type of the section as shown in Fig.1 with
fck=30MPa, fy=500 MPa and reinforced with

1. Ast=1415 mm2
2. Ast=2413 mm2.

Q2a. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of a doubly reinforced concrete beam 250mm
wide and 520mm overall depth. The beam is provided with two 20mm dia. bars on
compression side and two, 28mm dia. + one, 25mm dia. bars on tension side. Use M30 grade
concrete and Fe415 grade steel. Assume effective cover of 40mm on both sides.

b. Explain the shear resisting components of an RCC beam without shear reinforcements. Also
write short notes on different types of web reinforcements.

Q3a. Derive the design formulae for a reinforced concrete flanged, under reinforced section (T-
section) with the help of neat diagrams.
b. Write the guide lines to be followed during design of a stair case. Also plan a suitable stair
case for a multi-storeyed building. The size of staircase room is 3.5m x 4.5m , the floor to
floor height is 3.5 m. provide flights around lift well of size 2m x 1.5m.

Q4. Write short notes on

1. Working stress method

2. Limit state of Serviceability
3. Characteristic load & Load Factor
4. Torsional Reinforcement
5. Minimum eccentricity in RCC column

Group B
Q1. A simply supported rcc beam of 5m effective span, carries an udl of 40 kN/m excluding its
own weight. Following all norms of IS 456-2000 , design the beam. Adopt M20 concrete and
Fe415 steel. Take b=300mm. also show reinforcement details through neat sketches.

Q2. Design a rcc slab panel of size 4.5m x 6m, carrying a live load of 5kN/m2 and floor finishing
of 0.8 kN/m2. The two adjacent edges of slab panel are discontinuous and corners of the
slab are restricted to lift-up. Design the slab using M20 concrete and Fe250 steel, following
IS 456-2000 recommendations. Draw the reinforcement detailing at cg. of top and bottom
reinforcement.

Q3. Design an axially loaded column carrying an working load of 1400 kN. The unsupported
height of column is 4m and it is hinged at top and fixed at bottom. The column is assumed to
be short column. Show reinforcement detailing via neat diagrams. Use M30 concrete and
Fe500 steel.
