WHAT IS MODERN
DANCE?
A style of theatrical dancing
that is not restricted.
It is an expressive form of art.
It is a highly expressive style of
dance that challenges the
structured dance technique of
classical ballet. The focus of
modern dance is expression,
rather than following a rigid set
of postures or technical positions
that ballet dancers are trained
in.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF MODERN DANCE
1. Graham :
This was named after Martha Graham. This
style basically focuses on the use of
contraction, release, recovery, and fall. The
style is much grounded and the technique is
visibly contrary to the slender and graceful,
airborne ideals of ballet.

2. Limon :
This was named after Jose Limon. It involves
exploring the use of energy in relation to
gravity and working with weight in terms of
rebound, fall, suspension and recovery.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF MODERN DANCE
3. Release :
Placing emphasis on minimizing tension in the
search for fluidity and clarity and the efficient
use of breath and energy. In Release technique
just as it sounds, we release through the
muscles and joints to create ease of movement,
releasing the breath to support the release of
the body.

4. Improvisation :
It mainly focuses on the relationship between
movements and performance and on the
investigation of movements. Development of
individual movement material is made possible
through a variety of creative explorations.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF MODERN DANCE

5. Contact Improvisation :
Contact improvisation describes a duet dance
form characterized by fluid movement, weight
exchange, and touch. Partners improvise the
dance using the natural movement of the body.
MODERN BALLET
Modern Ballet, also refered to as "Contemporary
Ballet" is a genre of dance that incorporates
elements of both classical ballet and modern
dance. Often confused with modern dance
(which is a separate style of dance all its own),
contemporary ballet represents a departure from
the restraints of traditional classical ballet
technique and traditional rules of composition.
Contemporary ballet has roots in the classical
technique and vocabulary, but uses those roots
as a place to explore, experiment, and challenge
tradition.
JAZZ DANCE
Jazz dance is a social dance style that emerged at the
turn of the 20th century when African American dancers
began blending traditional African steps with European
styles of movement. Though Jazz dance was born
through intimate religious and social gatherings, it has
always had a performative feel. The African dances that
built the foundation of Jazz were explosive, grounded,
sensuous, and rhythmic. And like Jazz music, Jazz dance
was centered around improvisation and a call and
response format that allowed dancers to create a
conversation between the musicians, the instruments,
and their bodies.
QUICKSTEP
There are two pivotal locations that contributed to the development of Quickstep dancing
and it’s place in the United States today. Its origins go back as far as 19th century England,
and the dance’s development soared in suburban New York in the 1920s. The history
developing out of England began in the 1850’s when the general public commemorated
presidents, military exhibitions, regiments, and heroes with a march known as the
Quickstep.

This English’s Quickstep focused heavily on smooth steps of the Charleston with the
movement and rhythm of the Foxtrot, although most dancers found the tempo of the
Foxtrot to be too slow. When big bands started playing music at a faster tempo, dancers
quickened the steps of the foxtrot and the Charleston. Bands began playing the popular
Foxtrot style dances at a faster pace. They began to call the music and dancing the “Quick
Foxtrot.” Because the Charleston also became a stylish dance during this time, it was often
combined with this Quick Foxtrot.
FOXTROT
The foxtrot dance was first developed in 1914 in the
United States. Although the exact origin of the dance is
unclear, it’s believed that the foxtrot first originated in
Black American nightclubs before it was popularized by
ballroom dancers Vernon and Irene Castle. Foxtrot is a
graceful ballroom dance, in which couples use a
combination of long walking movements and short
quick steps to glide across the dance floor. The dancers’
rise and fall motions can be mistaken for the waltz;
however, the foxtrot is danced in a 4/4 time signature,
while the waltz is danced in a 3/4 time signature. Thus,
the foxtrot has four steps for each beat of music, with
the first and third steps accented.

CHA CHA
The cha-cha dance originated from
Cuba and was originally known as the
cha-cha-cha. The dance gained
popularity around the 1950's and was
created from two other dances – the
'mambo' and the 'danzon'. While
working with the charanga group
'Orquesta America' in Cuba performed
at dance halls in Havana.
Enrique Jorrin
The footwork pattern "one-two-cha-
cha-cha" has its roots in the vocal
imitation of the sound produced by
the shoes.
BOOGIE
Boogie dance, or boogie-woogie,
is a form of swing dancing. It is
called boogie-woogie in Europe,
but this dance is more commonly
known as East Coast swing in the
United States.
Boogie-woogie was originally
called "barrelhouse" dancing.
The step variation for boogie
dance is six or eight count with
sharp, quick movements.
RUMBA
Rumba is originated in Cuba, and became famous in
the USA during the 1920’s. This dance’s character was
an offshoot from the Bolero-Son dance, dances to
afro-cuban inspired music. This dance incorporates a
lot of foot and leg pressure into the floor with every
weight change. There is a natural hip action that is
achieved from bending and straightening the knees.
In open figures there is an emphasize on arm styling
by extending the “free arms”.
SALSA
Salsa is a syncretic dance form with origins from Cuba
as the meeting point of Spanish (European) and
African cultures. Salsa is normally a partner dance,
although there are recognized solo forms such as solo
dancing "suelta" and "Rueda de Casino" where multiple
couples exchange partners in a circle. Salsa can be
improvised or performed with a set routine. Salsa is
popular throughout Latin America as well as in North
America, Europe, Australia, and some countries in Asia
and the Middle East. It is fast becoming a global
phenomenon.
PASO DOBLE
The origins of the Paso Doble (translated to
“double step”) are disputed but every origin
story has roots in Spanish bullfighting.
Since the 1930s, the dance has portrayed
the gentleman as the bullfighter and the
lady as his cape. During the performance,
the actions of the bull are suggested along
with some aggressive action in certain
movements.

POP DANCE
Origins of dance styles can get tricky, because OG’s have different accounts and
interpretations of that story according to their regions and circles of influence. While there
are several moving parts of Popping's history that sometimes conflict or overlap, one clear
part of the dance style's origin is that it started among groups of teenage friends in
deindustrializing parts of the city. relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body,
referred to as a pop or a hit. This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in
combination with various movements and poses.

Popping is also used as an umbrella term to refer to a group of closely related illusionary
dance styles and techniques that are often integrated with popping to create a more varied
performance, such as the Robot (dance), Waving (dance) and tutting. However, it is distinct
from breaking and Locking (dance), with which popping is often confused. A popping
dancer is commonly referred to as a popper.
