Watch the video by Dr. David Crystal. Then, answer the following questions:
1. React to the statement "English is not a single variety. It is conglomeration
of different dialects."
I agree with the statement "English is not a single variety. It is conglomeration of
different dialects." English is a single language that have different variety or dialect.
There are many countries out there that are also using English language and our dialect
may be different with one another. Culture, geographical location, and influence of other
countries are some of the reasons why we have different dialects of English. Because
we have different dialects some of us may find it hard to understand others even if we
are speaking the same language which is English.
2. In what aspects do the British, American, and Australian English differ?
British, American, and Australian English have their differences in terms of
pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. The most obvious difference
between British English, American English, and Australian English is the pronunciation
or accents. For example, American English pronounce the letter “r” more clearly while
British and Australian English drops the “r” sounds. The second difference is their
spelling. Australian and British English spelling are very close while American English
spells differently. For example, British and Australian English use “ou” in some words
while American English use “or” (colour, color). The grammar difference is probably the
least noticeable. For example, their use of present tense.
3. Name one (1) challenge/difficulty that you already experienced in studying
the different varieties of English. How did you overcome that
challenge/difficulty?
Before this lesson, I didn’t have any idea that using different varieties of English in one
conversation is somehow wrong. Through this lesson I learned that we should learn at least one
variety of English to use this as our primary mode of communication. Through this subject I will
continuously learn about these varieties, and I will learn how to use it to communicate with
others effectively.
