Name: Ducusin, Angelica Jane I.

Strand and Section: 12 STEM Euclid

Type of Academic Paper: Reaction paper

Title: Abstract: the Art of Design / Paula Scher: Graphic Design

Arts is already a part of my daily life from the moment i learned how to pick up a pencil and
draw. I decided to write a reaction paper about Graphic design for it has been my greatest
interest. I also wanted to do a reaction paper on this specific series because it's important for
me to acquire more knowledge about arts because i aspire to be a fine arts student. Abstract:
The art of design is a Netflix series about some of the greatest and known artists or designers
and about their works. There a lot of artists in the world but only few stands out. Let me
introduce Paul Scher, the main character in this documentary. One of the most famous graphic
designers in the world is Paula Scher. Scher's work blurs the distinction between fine art and
popular culture. Her pictures have become part of the American lexicon because they are iconic,
wise, and approachable. Her father once said that art is stupid and smart people become
engineers. Is that really true? I'll have to disagree on that.

Art is not stupid and smart people can also be an artist. Base on the video, Paula created a
typographic language that pleased a lot of people because it was American, New Yorkish and it
made sense for them and Scher made sure that it would be part of their everyday life. She's
smart for making a way to let everyone see her work. She's smart enough to work her way up
in this industry. Her works are not just some ordinary art but it's arts in the streets, in some
walls you see when you walk in New York. She's basically everywhere. She's a very influential
designer. Her works are very visible and powerful, and it speaks no matter how bold or how
thin the letters look. Not only does her work stand out to me but also how she treats her
workmates. In their firm there is no such thing as superiority. "There is no boss, only friends"
says Paula. She's a team player and i love that. Her personality speaks in her art. Her beautiful
art mirrors her personality.
In conclusion to all of this, Arts will never be stupid because in all other subjects we can
integrate arts. In our everyday life we can see arts and arts makes our life colorful and fun.
Additionally, because art is so skill-driven and content-rich, students must put in a lot of effort.
In other words, it requires a lot of time and work to complete. So, to everyone who thinks that
art is stupid, think again, look at Paula's work and maybe you'll change your mind.
