Katan Saree

Overview:
Katan silk saree is one of the best sarees
in Bangladesh. The finest silk is used to
create katan sarees, which include
intricate stitching and design. They are
renowned for their hand-woven traditional
needlework, and the resulting materials
are incredibly gorgeous and sophisticated,
making them the ideal attire for formal
occasions like parties and other gatherings
that demand sophistication.

Twisting threads together results in katan


silk, a stronger, longer-lasting fabric. The
creation's nature results in a beautiful,
textured background that makes the cloth
shine clearly. One of the most identifiable
materials is katana silk, which stands out
from other varieties of silk due to its
distinctive look. The queen of all materials
is often referred to as katan silk.
The katan saree is more comfortable to
wear. The cloth seems to be quite expensive.
In order to make a robust and solid fabric,
threads are held together to create this
fabric. It is one of the durable fabrics. The
diversity of Katan Saree is what makes it so
popular. The cloth katan itself comes in
more than 20 distinct breeds. The most well-
known of the numerous include Opera
Katan, South Katan, Silk Katan, Mirpur
Katan, Indian Katan, Benarasi Katan, Net Katan, etc.

History
During the Mughal era, katan silk arrived in India from Persia. Women from royal households
adored wearing silk that they had paid for from Persia and some regions of India. They pay for
the weaving to be done gracefully and elegantly. The majority of the female members of the
royal families chose this fabric due to its vivaciousness.

The Mughal royals were an afficionado of the katan. Instead of wearing only one cloth during a
24-hour day, the royals opted to wear three or more, handing down their fine attire to people in
lesser positions.
Location
Since the 1950s, Muslims who
immigrated to Bangladesh from
Benaras during the 1947 time of
partition, have been producing
Benaroshi katan sarees in Dhaka's
Mohammadpur and Mirpur
neighborhoods. Today, Bangladeshi
camp dwellers who speak Urdu
continue to support the katan sector.
At the Mirpur Banaroshi Polli, there
are over 110 shops, 11,000 weavers,
designers, and handlooms are located in the camp regions.

Process
Creating katan silk saree requires a series of meticulous steps, ensuring that the highest quality is
achieved. Manufacturing process is done in three stages-

3. Finishing Process

Preparatory Process

Better fabric standards are provided by weavers who make katan silk with great care and
precision. Spun thread, or yarns, are prepared in order to create katan silk.

Weaving process

Yellowed yarns of silk are steamed and


these are mixed with chemicals to be
pressed into shapes without breaking or cracking and are dyed. After that they are arranged in a
separated frames. Then the katan silk are marked with a piece of charcoal which indicates for a
dyeing process.

Finishing Process

Subsequently, they bind threads together


with the use of wax. The cloth is dyed with
the appropriate colors every single time.
This allows for the creation of the forms
and the opening of potential knots to create
a katan silk. The silkworms food comes
from a mulberry leaves.

Consumers
Katan Silk Saree is famous around the
Southeast Asia region particularly- India.
Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. The Katan
Silk Saree are only worn by women. It has a
highly opulent appearance and is perfect for
