SECONDARY SCHOOL CALA

LEARNING AREA: PURE MATHEMATICS

LEVEL: F6

CALA TYPE: PEN AND PAPER ACTIVITIES

DESIGNED MODEL OR ILLUSTRATIONS

TOPIC: CALCULUS

SUB-TOPIC: DIFFERENTIATION (Syllabus page 18)

CALA TITLE: MAXIMISING AND MINIMISING USING DIFFERENTIATION

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS

 Research
 Communication
 Critical thinking
 Problem solving
 Sampling

BACKGROUND

There is an increase in littering at school and due to Covid-19 there is need for more bins to
decongest those already available.

CALA

The CALA has two parts A and B which you are supposed to completed

PART A

 Research on the materials that can be used to make bins

 Research on the advantage and disadvantage of each material researched
 Find a quotation for several materials that can be used to make the bins
 In your report include interviews, record notes, use ICT tools, take pictures and make
recordings of your findings on types of bins that can be made.
PART B

Using the information in part A

 Formulate a functions of the cost of one chosen material that will maximise the
volume of the bins but minimising the cost of the material used.
 Make a sample of the bin and explain and write notes on the advantage of the type of
material used in relation to its cost and on maximising the holding capacity of the bin.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

 To assess your presentation the teacher will consider your research materials,
explanations about your functions and model that you have designed.
 An Achievement Standard specific to this CALA will be provided so that you are
aware of the assessment criteria.

CALA TIPS
 Write notes
 Use ICT tools, take pictures
 Make recordings
 Make models/illustrations/poster
 Read your notes
LEARNER CALA GUIDE

CALA TITLE: MAXIMISING AND MINIMISING USING DIFFERENTIATION

SCHOOL: WARREN PARK

LEARNER: JUNNY MARS

DATE: 12 SEPTEMBER 2021

CALA CONTEXT

BACKGROUND

There is an increase in littering at school due to shortages of bins and covid-19 restriction on
the movement of learners that has affected the hygiene and the outlook of the school.

CALA DESCRIPTION

To make you aware of different types of material that can used to make bins, and find the
suitable material that will maximise the holding capacity of the bins but at the same time
minimising the cost of making the bins.

 Carry out a research on types of material that can used to make bins [10]
 Take quotations on the prices of material researched on. [5]
 Record information and make notes on the quotations [5]
 Formulate a mathematical function on the cost and the volume of the bin [10]
 Show that the function minimises the cost and maximises the volume. [10]
 Make a model of the bin [5]
 Submit your model and notes for assessment [5]

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

 The CALA will be assessed out of 50

The teacher will assess:
 Your quotations
 Notes from interviews
 model
 Your write up.
 Marks will be given for your findings

CALA TIPS

In your research consider

 Notes on types of alternative material used to make bins

 Use ICT tools, take pictures
 Make recordings
 Read your notes

CALA DESRIPTION

The CALA is assessed out of 50

 Assessing the findings on types of material that can used to make bins [10]
 Assess quotations on the prices of material researched on. [5]
 Recorded information and notes on the quotations [5]
 Formulation of a mathematical function on the cost and the volume of the bin [10]
 Assess that the function minimises the cost and maximises the volume. [10]
 submitted model/ illustration of the bin [5]
 assess submission or non-submission [5]

Assessment procedure

 Assessing questions asked

 Awarding marks
 Assessing samples, poster or illustrations or model
