TUTORIAL # 3

1. Which scientist was responsible for the discovery of the proton and the electron and which
experiments did they use.

2. Discuss the changes made to the structure of the atom, after the Gold foil experiment and
after line spectrum observations of Hydrogen. Use diagrams where appropriate.

3. The yellow light given off by a sodium vapour lamp used for public lighting has a
wavelength of 589 nm. What is the frequency and energy of this radiation?

4. Consider a transition of the electron in the hydrogen atom from n = 6 to the n = 3.

a. Determine the wavelength (in nm and m) of light associated with this transition?

b. What is the energy associated with this transition?

c. Will the light be absorbed or emitted?

5. What is the wavelength associated with a golf ball of mass 21.3 g travelling with a velocity
48.6 m/s?
6. Explain, what is meant by duality of matter and which experiment was this duality
highlighted ?

7. Give the allowable combinations of quantum numbers for each of the following electrons:
a. a 2p electron
b. a 5f electron
c. a 4d electron
8. What type of orbital is designated by combination given below:
a. n = 4, l = 2
b. n = 3, l = 0
c. n = 2, l = 1
9. Write the electronic configuration for the highlighted atoms and calculate Zeff for one of
their valency electrons.
a. V in NaVO3
b. Cu in CuCl2
c. Cr in [MgCr3O4 ]1+
d. Co in Co3N2

10. Arrange the following ions in order of decreasing size: Sr -1, Rb+, Se2–, As3–, Br–1. Give
reasons for your order of arrangement.

11. With the aid of orbital filling diagrams, explain why electron affinity of C is more negative
than N?

12. Explain with the aid of orbital diagrams why the first ionization energy of magnesium 738 is
greater than that of aluminium 578 and sulphur is less than that of phosphorous.
