Dear friends.

When I saw for the first time, one year ago, Tjasa and Luca dancing a Viennese Waltz which was
completely different from what we were used to see before. I was really impressed and happy that
someone took the initiative to change this dance.

We were immediately commenting this innovation in our Presidium Meetings and we thought that Carlos
the time was coming to make some improvements on that wonderful dance and make it more
interesting and attractive for the audience. WD
Presi
I know that not everyone is happy with these changes, but let me remind that also the actual
Tango we are dancing has practically nothing in common with the Tango Argentino, and for
example Pasodoble has not anymore any similarity to the Spanish Origin.

Therefore the WDSF Presidium and the WDSF Academy have decided to open all dances to
innovations and I'm happy that Tjasa and Luca took this initiative and are presenting their
excellent work in this beautiful and interesting book.

Thank you for your big efforts and I hope that your innovations can be accepted by most of our
athletes very soon.

Best regards,

Dear Tjasa, Dear Luca,

In behalf of the World DanceSport Federation, we are really happy and we appreciate your efforts
to improve one of our nicest dances: the Vienese Waltz.

As a former dancer, I felt always that something is missing in this beautiful dance. After our initial
conversations, I'm delighted to see what a open choreography means in Viennese Waltz. First, Marco
without any problem to maintain the character of the dance, but also to give this dance a complete
different and innovated "air". WD
Sports
I must say that you both, are one of the first dancers that ever have created this open
choreography.

In our 2011 Annual General Meeting, the World DanceSport Federation Member Bodies decided to
include open choreography in all dances.

I'm really looking forward to see many of our top couples improving this dance in a way that you
already have done it before.

Thank you very much for your work, and good luck in the future.

Introduction World

Luca Bussoletti and Tjasa Vulic Throughout the years DanceSport has evolved
tremendously due to ever increasing physical and
coordinative abilities of athletes from around the world.
Choreography of Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot and
Quickstep was developed and implemented with new
figures in order to allow greater and personal
interpretation. Although many of figurations danced are
not a part of the basic syllabus, the character and
technical particularities of each dance were maintained.

This book is intended as a guide in development of

choreography in Viennese Waltz which, up to now, has
been left more or less untouched. All the figures were
chosen with criteria of maintaining the character and
beauty of this historical dance.

GeneNOT
POSITIONS OF FEET

This refers to the position of one foot in relation to the other at the end of a step, for example: step 2 of Natural Turn for man is
given as LF to side due to the turn being made between feet while the LF is moving, but the foot will move forward first.

ALIGNMENT

Refers to the foot or feet, not the body and describes where the feet are facing, backing or pointing in relation to the room at the
end of a step, for example: the alignment of step 1 in Natural Turn for man is facing DW.

9
Pointing will occur when on the inside of a turn, having taken a side step turning the foot more than the body for the purpose of
maintaining contact with the partner. Example: step 2 of Natural Turn for the lady where the amount of turn is 3/8 with the
feet, body turns less. Therefore the step is pointing DC.

AMOUNT OF TURN

The overall amount of turn used in a figure, or the amount of turn made with the feet between or on (pivots) each step. As in all
technique books, the amounts of turn given in the charts are only recommended. A higher or lower amount of turn can be used
in accordance with dancers' interpretation.

RISE AND FALL

The elevations are produced by feet, knees and body. The change of level produced by elevations creates the swing effect of
the dance and in the moment of lowering facilitates execution of drive actions. The elevation in Viennese Waltz is generally
completed at the end of the first step and maintained during following steps inside the same Bar of music. Due to the speed of
music, there will be no maximum rise in the Viennese Waltz; therefore there will be no complete extension of ankles and knees.
Due to the medium rise, the knees will be kept slightly flexed and the feet placement in the moment of rise will be on the Ball.

NFR (No Foot Rise)

Occurs when body and knees produce elevation, but the feet are kept flat. Example: step 1 of Natural Turn for the lady.

FOOTWORK

This describes part or parts of the foot in contact with the floor during a step. It is to be noted that the footwork described
refers to the end of a step and does not include the way the foot is used throughout the whole step. Example: on all normal
walks back, the footwork is described as TH, however the moving foot will first start to move back Flat and passing through
Ball before achieving the Toe and finally lowering the Heel.

10
OFF- BEAT STEPS

Some of the figures added do not comply with three steps/ three beats construction. Therefore introduction of Off- Beat timing
is necessary. When dancing off-beat figures, the rhythmical division is at the discretion of the dancer. For the purpose of
clarity, the division given in charts is 2 beats (1,2) on the first step and 1 beat (3) on the second step of the figure danced.

CBMP

The placing of the stepping foot onto or across the line of the other foot, forward or back, thus giving an appearance of CBM
being used but without turning the body.

CBM

A body action used to initiate turn. It is the moving of the opposite side of the body towards the stepping foot, either forward or
backward. Due to positioning of the lady on man's right side, the amount of CBM does not present a problem in Natural turning
figures, however should be limited when dancing Reverse turning figures.

PIVOT

A form of stationary turn made on the ball of one foot with foot flat. When taking the pivot backward typical footwork will be
BHB to allow body weight to move forward into next movement.

PIVOTING ACTION

The counterpart of Natural Pivot, it is a turn to the right on ball of RF with foot flat.

SIDE LEADING

When same side of the body moves with the stepping foot at the time of taking a step either forward or back, usually before an
outside step. It includes shoulder and hip leads. When side leading is used as part of preparation for an outside step, the step
taken will be slightly more opened than normally.

11
BODY ACTIONS

Evolution of standard danves has changed dramatically the dynamic, amount of movement and overall visual effect of dancing.
However, the biggest changes were not made in the usage of feet and legs, but in the way dancers of today use the upper part
of their bodies. Body actions are crucial as they allow not only for bigger and stronger lines to bre produced, but also increase
togetherness of the couple and create an effect of lightness in the movement.

Planes of Movement - Human body definition by three imaginary We define “Body Actions” all the actions that involve the uppe
planes part of the body. There are three body actions: Torsion, Sway
and Extension. To understand how these actions are produced it
is necessary to introduce some notions of basic human anatomy.
C - Horizontal
In anatamoy, human body is defined by three imaginary planes
of movement (see figure).

In three-dimensional space, each plane is defined by two out of

three possible axes which define plane’s position in space.
These axes are vertical axis, horizontal axis and sagital axis.

A - Frontal Each plane has two axes that represent the borders of the plane
and one axis which intersects it, become the plane’s axis of
