Engraving with the

Cricut Maker

This document will show you how to en-
grave and cut a holiday ornament out of
leather using the Cricut Maker.

SAFETY NOTES:
• Tie back long hair prior to operating
the cricut
• If blade is dull and requires changing,
ask the instructor
• Never place your hands near the roll-
er bar if the machine is running
Materials/Resources:
• Cricut MakerTM
• Computer #1
• Cricut Engraving Tip
• Cricut Knife Blade
• Precut 2.4mm Tooling Leather
• Standard or StrongGrip Mat
• Masking Tape
On classroom computer
#1, double click the Design
Space application to open it.

If prompted, sign in with the


Cricut ID “graphics101” and
the password “guest”.
On the design space home
page, find the “leather
ornament” project and
double click to send it to the
canvas.

On the canvas, resize your B


ornament to fit your leather
material one of two ways:
A) click and drag the arrow at the
lower right corner
B) type in your measurements
using the size tab. A
When you are happy with
the size, click “make it” in
the top right corner.

The design will default to


the upper left corner of the
mat. If you need to change
the position, you may do so
by clicking and dragging the
object.
Click “continue” in the
lower right corner.

Set your material by clicking


on “tooling leather 2.4mm”
from the list.
Tape leather to mat using
masking tape. Do not
overlap the edges more
than necessary as that can
interfere with the engraving.

Slide star wheels over to the


right hand side of the roller
bar.
Design space will now
prompt you to load the
engraving tip and the mat.

Load the engraving tip


into clamp B on the cricut
by opening the lever and A
placing it with the plastic B
part facing OUT. When
placed, close the clamp.
Place the mat under the
roller bar with the material
on the upper left.

Load the mat into the


machine by pressing the
flashing load/unload button.
Begin the engraving by
pressing the “go” button on
the machine.

A progress bar will show


you the status of your
engraving.
Once complete, design
space will prompt you to
load the knife blade into
clamp B and begin the
operation again.

Remove the engraving tip


and load the knife blade into
clamp B.
Begin the cut by pressing
the “go” button on the
machine.

A progress bar will show


you the amount of passes
with the knife and time
remaining.
Once complete, design
space will ask you to check
your cut and either finish or
cut again.

You may check your cut


using this helpful guide
from cricut.
Once satisfied with your cut,
unload the mat from the
machine and remove your
ornament from the mat.

Once your ornament is


removed, you may dye it or
finish it in any way you like.
