The Mole and Chemical Compounds:
Starting from this week, lecture slides will not be shared.

However, students will be informed about

(a) topics to be covered,

(b) learning outcomes,

(c) any supporting text information,

(d) study question set information before the lectures.

The Mole and Chemical Compounds:
TOPICS TO BE COVERED

1) Types of Chemical Compounds and Their Formulas

2) The Mole Concept and Chemical Compounds

3) Composition of Chemical Compounds

4) Oxidation States: A Useful Tool in Describing Chemical Compounds

5) Naming Compounds: Organic and Inorganic Compounds

6) Names and Formulas of Inorganic Compounds

7) (Shortly) Names and Formulas of Organic Compounds

The Mole and Chemical Compounds:
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Students who complete this lecture successfully, can

1) list different compound types along with their detailed descriptions.

2) define chemical formulas for different types of compounds in detail.

3) explain how molecules can be seen among elements.

4) calculate the molar mass of a compound with a known formula if the molar mass values of forming elements are provided.

5) calculate the mass percentage of an element in a compound with known formula if the molar mass values of forming elements are provided.

6) find the formula of a compound when the mass percentages and the molar mass values of the forming elements are provided.

7) calculate the mass of carbon dioxide formed when a carbon-including compound with a known formula is burned with an excess of oxygen if the
molar mass values of the elements forming the compound and oxygen are provided.

8) calculate the mass percentage of hydrate of the compound with known formula if the molar mass values of forming elements are provided.

9) calculate the final mass of a hydrate-including compound with a known formula and initial mass when it is totally dried, if the molar mass values
of forming elements are provided.

10) explain what oxidation state is and find the oxidation state of elements or ions in a chemical compound with a known formula.

11) name the given chemical compounds and write the chemical formula of a compound when its name is provided.
