A. A company that makes cellphones.

They produce over 300,000 cellphones in a month, with 50

staff working 20 days and 9 hours every day during a six-month period.

Given:

Number of cellphones = 300,000

Number of labor hours per day = 9

Months = 6

Number of days worked in a month = 20

Number of employees = 50

Solution:

Input = Number of employees x Number of hours of work per day x Number of months x
Number of days worked in a month

= 50 x 9 x 6 x 20

= 54,000

Productivity = 300,000 / 54,000

= 5.56

Now, imagine that the company has decided to hire an operations manager to improve processes and
workflow. This results in a greater rise in the number of cellphones produced while maintaining the
same level of work. They produce over 370,000 cellphones in a month, with 51 staff working 20 days
and 9 hours every day during a six-month period.

Given:

Number of cellphones = 370,000

Number of labor hours per day = 9

Months = 6

Number of days worked in a month = 20

Number of employees = 51

Solution:

Input = Number of employees x Number of hours of work per day x Number of months x
Number of days worked in a month

= 51 x 9 x 6 x 20

= 55,080

Productivity = 370,000 / 55,080

= 6.72

Before starting a time study, it's critical to find someone who is qualified and experienced enough to
complete a certain task or operation at a typical pace. The worker should be familiar with the typical
procedure for doing a task or process. The performance rating factor and allowance factor employed in
this study are based on analysts' judgments; consequently, work-study analysts must be reviewed and
retrained to keep the standard times calibrated. Cost control, scheduling, and salary and budget
estimation can all benefit from a time standard developed through a time study. Therefore, Work
measurement should be done in the industrial and business area to increase productivity and efficiency

From the first scenario, the company produces 300,000 of cellphones in a month, with 50 staff working
20 days and 9 hours every day during a six-month period. That means 5.56 of output was produced
every hour. To put it another way, the company generated 5.56 cellphones every hour. While on the
second scenario which is the company decided to hire an operations manager to improve processes and
workflow. The company produces 370,000 of cellphones in a month, with 51 staff working 20 days and 9
hours every day during a six-month period. As a result, the company generated 6.72 cellphones every
hour. That’s a difference of 1.16 in productivity produced from only one hire. This results in a greater
rise in the number of cellphones produced while maintaining the same level of work. It's easy to
understand how having the data in front of you and making one small change or tweak may have a big
influence on overall productivity and efficiency as well as the output.

B. Government agencies provide critical information and services that have a direct impact on
people's lives. They are responsible for responding to citizens' requirements, running as
successfully and efficiently as possible, and providing timely and accurate information. From my
perspective, our government agencies in the Philippines need to apply methods of engineering/
methods design to increase the quality of their information and services by making them more
valuable and useable, as well as saving money in the long run by making iterative improvements,
by putting people first and adopting a user-centric approach. The objective of methods
engineering that helps the government agencies is to boost productivity and quality while
lowering costs in manufacturing and service firms' direct and indirect operations. It can be used
in government agencies regulating businesses in our country that require human effort. It is the
systematic process of scrutinizing all direct and indirect operations in order to introduce
improvements that will make work easier to perform while maintaining or improving quality and
will allow work to be completed more smoothly, in less time, with less energy, effort, and
fatigue, and with lower investment per unit. There are benefits of using methods of engineering
in government agencies such as reducing the amount of time it takes to complete a project,
conserving resources, and cutting costs by specifying the most suitable direct and indirect
materials for the production of goods and services, to carry out production without losing sight
of energy or energy availability, to deliver a product that is increasingly reliable and of high
quality, to maximize the safety, health, and well-being of all employees or workers, to carry out
production with increasing consideration for the need for protection from environmental hazard
and to carry out production with increasing consideration for the need for environmental
protection. Therefore, the main objectives of methods of engineering are to increase
productivity and lower unit costs, enabling the highest possible production of goods for the
maximum number of people. More labor for more people for more hours per year will arise
from the ability to produce more with less.
