bias in regards to culture, as well as the
ability to take different perspectives to gain a
more humane perspective
 Why Multicultural Literacy is important?

1) students gain a better understanding of both their own

culture and the culture of others (Hseu & Hetzel, 2000)
2) students develop greater cognitive skills
3) promotes cultural sensitivity, empathy and unity, and
cross-cultural friendship
4) helps students look critically at the world
5) encourages identity formation
 SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

b. Knowledge that good and useful things can come
from those different from us
c. Willingness to compromise
d. Acceptance that there are limits

I. Conflicting Requirements for Peace

-The heart of multicultural literacy is peace

among different cultures – that is, productive
and non-violent interaction.

II. Nationalistic and Regionalistic

Pushback

-The increasing demand for multicultural

sensitivity, inclusion, and divert in the recent
years has also given rise to resistance from
groups who believe that their identity is being
“watereddown” by the needed compromises.

III. The Persistence of the Problem

-The issues of discrimination in all its forms

(racial, religious, tribal, cultural, etc.) are
really issues of hatred

 THE QUESTION OF VALUE
Despite all out advances in science, technology, and
culture, why is discrimination still a problem today?
What is the root of this hatred?
Now if a lack of education is to blame, then a lack of
education in what, exactly? Is it awareness of the
existence of those different from us? Is it awareness
that those different from us are worthy of respect?
