COPPER & MILD STEEL COUPON CLEANING PROCEDURE

CLEANING STEPS

1. Immerse coupon into the beaker contain 15 to 20% Hydrochloric Acid or 5 to 10%
Sulfuric Acid (e.g. 200ml is required then 40ml of Hydrochloric Acid 37% + 160ml
DI water or 200ml is required then 20ml of Sulfuric Acid 98% + 180ml) cleaning
solution with cleaning time of 2 to 3 minutes for copper steel coupon & 25 minutes
maximum for mild steel coupon.
2. Remove coupon from beaker & rinse coupon with fresh water.
3. Clean loose deposits from coupon surface by cloth or tissue paper.
4. Repeat step 2 & 3 until coupon surface is clean.
5. Soak the coupon in concentrated Methanol solution for 5 minutes.
6. Dry the coupon with cloth or tissue paper.
7. Put coupon into oven at 105 degree C for 1 hour.
8. Take out coupon & put into desiccator for 45 minutes if available.
9. Weigh the coupon 3 times to get nearest 0.0001gm weight.

CORROSION RATE CALCULATION

Mil per Year (mpy) = [Weight Loss (g) x 143750] / [Exposure Time (days) x Coupon
Area (cm2) x Coupon Density (g/cm3)]

1 mpy = 0.0254 mm/y


Weight Loss (g) = Initial Weight – Final Weight
