Instructions:
• Answer any Five full questions.
• Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.
• Scientific calculator is permitted.

1. a A horizontal bar supported by two suspended vertical wires 240 mm apart fixed to a rigid support. [08]
A load W is attached to the bar. The left-hand side wire is of copper with a diameter of 5 mm and
the right-hand side wire is of steel of 3 mm diameter. The length of both the wires is 4 m initially.
Find the position of the weight on the bar relative to the copper wire so that the wires extend by
the same amount.
Also, calculate the load, stresses and the elongation of each wire if W = 1 kN. Neglect the weight
of the bar and take Es = 210 GPa and Ec = 120 GPa.
b A metallic bar of 250 mm x 100 mm x 50 [08]
mm is loaded as shown in figure. Find
the change in volume. Take E = 2 x 10 5
N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio = 0.25. Also
find the change that should be made in
the 4 MN load, in order that there should
be no change in the volume of the bar.

2. a What are the different types of beams? Differentiate between a cantilever and a simply supported [04]
beam.
b A 10 m long simply supported beam carries two point loads of 10 kN and 6 kN at 2 m and 9 m [12]
respectively from the left end. It also has a uniformly distributed load of 4 kN/m run for the length
between 4 m and 7 m from the left end. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams.
3. a Enumerate the assumptions made in the theory of simple bending. Prove the relation [08]
b M E
= = for simple bending.
y I R
b A simply supported beam of 2 m span carries a uniformly distributed load of 140 kN per m over [08]
the whole span. The cross section of the beam is a T-section with a flange width of 120 mm, web
and flange thickness of 20 mm and overall depth of 160 mm. Determine the maximum shear stress
in the beam and draw the shear stress distribution for the section.
4. a A solid shaft of 250 mm diameter has the same cross-sectional area as the hollow shaft of the [08]
same material with inside diameter of 200 mm. Find the ratio of power transmitted by two shafts
for the same angular velocity, and compare the angles of twist in equal lengths of these shafts,
when stressed to same intensity.
b A stepped shaft fixed at the two ends as shown in figure is subjected to a torque of 300 N-m at the [08]
section C. The larger section is of aluminium and the smaller one is of steel. Determine the
maximum stresses in the two materials. Gs = 82 GPa and Ga = 27 GPa.

5. a A 4 m long fixed end hollow cast iron column supports an axial load of 1 MN. The external [08]
diameter of the column is 200 mm. Determine the thickness of the column by using Rankine
1
formula taking a constant of and working stress as 78 MN/m2.
6400
b A plane element of a body is subjected to a compressive stress of 300 MPa in x-x direction and a [08]
tensile stress of 200 MPa in the y-y direction. Each of the above stresses is subjected to a shear
stress of 100 MPa such that when it is associated with the compressive stress, it tends to rotate the
element in an anticlockwise direction.
Find graphically, the normal and shear stresses on a plane inclined at an angle of 30⁰ with the x-x
axis.
6. a A simply supported beam of length L carries a uniformly distributed load of intensity w starting [10]
from a distance L/4 from the left end and ending at the midspan. Deduce the expressions for slope
and deflection at any point.
b State the assumptions made in Euler’s formula. Give generalized Euler’s equations for different [06]
conditions.
