 Answer the following questions:

o Provide at least two instances where young Jose Rizal manifested

liberal ideas.

Jose Rizal’s very contribution to our country were his liberal ideas.
His liberal ideas served as an eye opener to Filipinos and what led
us to our country’s independence. Ever since a young boy, Rizal was
already open and vocal about the civil rights as well as his
patriotism towards his country through his literary works, poems,
and letters. One of these was a poem he wrote in his last year in
Ateneo Municipal, entitled ‘Por La Educación (Recibe Lustre La Patria)’
or Education Gives Luster to Motherland. This poem he wrote was
about his affection in his country and the importance of education
in which educated citizens will bring glory to his country. Another
written work of his was the A la Juventud Filipina which garnered a
winning award on a literature contest. This poem specifically calls
for the youth of the future, as well as talks about the Filipino
identity.

o Pick two Propaganda Movement contributions and objectives you

think still remain very important in today’s political climate.

If I were to pick two Propaganda Movement objectives, that would

be the call for social freedom as well as the protection from all
violence and injustice. As a citizen living in a democratic country,
one of our rights is the right to freedom and to heard. The number
of activisms as well as reform campaigns are currently growing
because there is a need for change in the government’s wrong
doings, which they are being ignored. Those who have the power
see people who criticizes them for their wrong doings see them as a
threat which lead to their death. In here comes the protection from
all harm and violence and injustice, that it is also part of the human
rights is for them to be protected from any danger or threats, and
that justice should be served equally.

o What was his “secret” mission during his stay in Europe? Was he
able to fulfill that mission? Explain how

Other than to continue his education in medicine as Jose Rizal’s sole

reason to fly into Europe, he also had this secret mission during his
stay. That during his stay, he had the other goal to observe the
colonizer’s land, their culture, traditions, life, government, and laws.
This is to further understand and help his fellow Filipinos be
liberated and free from being oppressed under the Spaniard’s hands,
as advised by his brother Paciano. With that, he did follow his
brother’s command. He traveled one country to another in Europe,
meeting and befriending republican and democratic Europeans. He
even looked for great people like Antonio de Morga, Dr. Feodor
Jagor and Ferdinand Blumentritt who have written books and
articles about the Philippines and their voyages in the country. He
was able to write and produced his literary works, especially Noli
Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, as well as other books. With this
he was able to fulfill his secret mission.
