Section 1: Sample Solutions

Q1. In a Young's double slit experiment, a student observes 8 fringes in a certain segment of screen when
a monochromatic light of 600 nm wavelength is used. If the wavelength of light is changed to 400 nm,
then the number of fringes he would observe in the same region of the screen is:

a) 12

b) 6

c) 8

d) 9

Solution:
CONCEPT:
For a Young's double slit experiment the schematic diagram is shown below:
Where, λ = wavelength of beam, D = difference between slits and optical screen, d = distance between
slits
We know that, Distance between fringes = y = nλD/d ----- (1)
The path difference = nλ ----- (2)
CALCULATION:
From equation (2) we know that when we use fringes of different wavelength in same path then path
difference will remain same i.e.
⇒ n1λ1 = n2λ2 ----- (3)
Given:
No. of fringes obtain by student (n1) = 8
Wavelength of beam used by student (λ1) = 600 nm
Changed wavelength of beam (λ2) = 400 nm
No. of fringes obtained (n2) =?
From equation (3) we get,
n1λ1 = n2λ2 ⇒ 8 × 600 = n2 × 400
n2 = 12 ⇒ for wavelength of 400 nm we observed 12 number of fringes.
Hence option 1) is the correct choice.

Q2. A light ray falls on a glass surface of refractive index √3, at an angle 60°. The angle between the
refracted and reflected rays would be:

a) 120°
b) 30°
c) 60°
d) 90°

Solution:
CONCEPT:
Snell's law - Snell's law is defined as the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle
of refraction is the equation to constant and it is written as;
sin(𝑖)
sin(𝑟)
= constant = μ ----- (1)
And it is also written using Fermat's principle;
n1 sinθ1 = n2sinθ2
Here, n1, and n2 are refractive indexes for two different mediums,
θ1 is the angle of incidence, and θ2 is the angle of refraction.
CALCULATION:
Given:
Refractive index of incidence ray, n1 = 1

Refractive index of refracted ray, n2 = √3

The angle of incidence, θ1 = 60o

And the angle of refraction, θ2 = r

A light ray falls on a glass surface of refractive index √3, at an angle of 60° as shown in the figure below,

Now, according to Snell's law, we have;

n1 sinθ1 = n2sin(r) ----- (2)
Now, on putting the given values in equation (2) we have;
1 × sin (60o) = √3 × sin (r)
√3/2
⇒ sin(r) =
√3
1
⇒ sin(r) = 2
⇒ r = 30o
Therefore the angle of refraction. r = 30o
The angle between the refraction and reflection = 60o + 30o = 90o
Hence, option 4) is the correct answer.

Q3. Given below are two statements :

Statement I:
Biot-Savart's law gives us the expression for the magnetic field strength of an infinitesimal current element
(IdI) of a current carrying conductor only.
Statement II:
Biot-Savart's law is analogous to Coulomb's inverse square law of charge q, with the former being related
to the field produced by a scalar source, Idl while the latter being produced by a vector source, q.

In light of above statements choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

a) Statement I is incorrect and Statement II is correct

b) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
c) Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
d) Statement I is correct and Statement II is incorrect

Solution:
CONCEPT:
Biot - Savart's law gives the equation of magnetic field produced by the current carrying segment and it
is written as;

µ0 𝐼𝑑𝐼 × 𝑟̂
⃗ =
𝑑𝐵
4𝜋𝑟 2
Here we have B as the magnetic field, I is the current, and r is the distance.
EXPLANATION:
Statement I - Biot-Savart's law gives us the expression for the magnetic field strength of an infinitesimal
current element (IdI) of a current carrying conductor only which is written as;

µ0 𝐼𝑑𝐼 × 𝑟̂
⃗ =
𝑑𝐵
4𝜋𝑟 2
Therefore this statement is true.
Statement II - In statement II is given that Biot-Savart's law is analogous to Coulomb's inverse square law
of charge q, with the former being related to the field produced by a scalar source, Idl while the latter
being produced by a vector source, q. The Biot- Savart's law is the equation of the magnetic field produced
by the current carrying conductor whereas in coulomb's law we find the force of attraction and repulsion
between the two masses. Biot-Savart's law is not analogous to Coulomb's inverse square law of charge q.
Therefore, this statement is false.
Hence, option 4) is the correct answer.
