PROBLEM-CAUSE-SOLUTION FORMAT FOR PERSUASIVE SPEECH

TOPIC : Women Should Pay Less for Period Stuffs

ISSUE : Period poverty has become a controversial issue which is because tampons,
pads and menstrual medicines, the women monthly needs are getting pricier
year by year.

PURPOSE : To persuade the audiences to support the idea and do changes in society to
make women pay less for period stuff.

I. INTRODUCTION

Attention Getter : “Oh my Goodness! Please do not happen today! I have no pads right
now. It is not supposed to be today.” Ladies, have you ever
experienced this? We will feel frust, angry and desperate because
something happened suddenly, right? Others might think, why don’t
women bring pads everywhere? Let me ask you guys. Do you bring
your spare boxer everywhere? To the cafe, class and mall? Second
question, do you know how much a piece of sanitary pad costs when it
is just 6 hours used? Women spend at least RM0.70 for each sanitary
pads. Korea Consumer Agency (2013) stated that menstrual pads are
estimated to use approximately 11400 pads throughout a woman's
lifetime (Hansol Choi, 2021). Please do count yourself. If the pads are
gold, women are the richest group in the world, I guess.

Thesis Statement : In the meantime, around 10% of young ladies in the UK have been
unable to manage the cost of period items; 15% have attempted to
bear the cost of them; and 19% have changed to a less appropriate
item because of cost (Claire Diamond, 2020). Period poverty is a
crucial issue that needs to be listened to by all and must be taken
seriously. Today, me, Nurin Hidayati, would like to persuade all the
audiences to seek the concern of the government to do further action
on this issue, as there is a need for making the importance of period
stuff as vital as the toilet tissue which women can reach it easily and it
is supplied in every restroom. At the end of the day, if women are
facing an unpredictable period, they can just grab the pad provided
without being panicked and asking for help.

Preview of the Main : Before I start my speech, I will explain an issue that arise when the
Points menstruation products are expensive. Then, I will bring on few proofs
on why the problems arise. Finally, I will wrap up this speech by
providing 3 solutions on how we can overcome this issue and the
benefits of doing so.

II. BODY
1.0 Topic Sentence 1
● The most controversial issue about my speech today is that menstruation products
are getting pricier year by year. RM0.70 for one sanitary pad and we usually use 2 to
three pads per day. Can you imagine how many needs like food and clothes we can
buy with a week of menstruation expenses? This is insane. People with stable
finances might don’t think this is an issue but to those who are struggling to fulfil
their daily needs, they have to sacrifice their convenience. I don’t deny there are still
a few brands of sanitary pads and tampons that are sold cheaper but little do you
know, what makes them at a lower price? The materials used are not the same as
the higher price stuff. It may give the women allergies, easily rip and it is not too
thick.

1.1 Supporting Detail 1

1.1.1 Specific detail
● As per Pandia Health, assuming a lady was to utilise one tampon at regular
intervals and four tampons are utilised each day, that would be equivalent to
20 tampons for a clockwork monthly cycle, adding up to tampons in their day
to day existence. Assuming a container of tampons cost $7 and there are 36
tampons in a single box, the expense for a lifetime would be equivalent to
$1,733.33 (Kristine Kim, 2021).

1.1.2 Specific detail

● Hansol Choi (2021) reported that a meticulous review of surveys conducted
in the 1990s and 2000s in the United States observed that 50% to 86% of
women used tampons and 62% to 73% used disposable menstrual pads.

1.2 Supporting Detail 2

1.2.1 Specific detail
● The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM)
through an investigation discovered that 13.1 percent of feminine destitution
among young people and ladies can not stand to purchase sterile napkins
because of excessive costs (Fitri Hazim, 2021) .
● All things considered, across every one of the five enterprises, products for
female purchasers were probably going to cost more than their male partners
(Kenneth A. Jacobsen, 2018) .
1.2.2 Specific detail
● A non - legislative association (NGO) uncovered there were a small bunch of
adolescent young ladies from helpless families and low - pay individuals who
decide to get pregnant on the grounds that in those nine months they don't
need to purchase towels ladies (Mohamad Shofi Mat Isa, 2021) .
● The Member of Parliament Petaling Jaya, Maria Chin Abdullah said that the
issue in this pandemic situation is people have to choose to buy between
sanitary pads or food because of the financial constraints (MalaysiaKini,
2021)

Transition: Now that I’ve shown you the three issues , now I will proceed on clarifying 2 causes on
why the period poverty occurs.

2.0 Topic Sentence 2

● Pink tax is increasing the cost of period supplies. Basically, pink tax is not a real tax
charged by the government. It is actually the profit that firms get from producing and selling
certain gender products. Why is it called ‘pink tax’? As we know, usually in any sign like the
restroom sign, blue sign is for men and pink sign is for women. So, this tax is specially
made for all women. How? It is charged only for the women’s products, especially
menstruation supplies. Gender inequality? Indeed.
● Menstruation waste management is conducted separately from the other waste although
the materials are the same. Taboos about menstruation waste are still shackling this era. In
India, they view menstrual as something filthy, contemptible and disgusting. Somehow, they
put aside the fact that menstruation is a normal body process for women, same as urine
and defecate.
2.1 Supporting Detail 1.
2.1.1 Specific detail
● As per Investopedia, "pink duty" is a value error wherein administrations and
items showcased to ladies cost more than indistinguishable items or
administrations advertised to men. Out of the 50 U.S. states, 30 states
actually have this pink duty (Kristine Kim, 2021).
2.1.2 Specific detail
● Analysts at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of
Pennsylvania observed ladies pay 40% more than people for a famous
balding battling froth despite the fact that the people's variants contain a
similar volume, drug strength, and inert fixings (Kenneth A. Jacobsen,
2018) .
2.2 Supporting Detail 2.
2.2.1 Specific detail
● Incinerators or feminine hygiene bins are used in some schools for disposing
menstrual waste material (Rajanbir Kaur, 2018).
2.2.2 Specific detail
● Sanitary pads, tampons, and other feminine cleanliness items are ordered as
'dry municipal waste' under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. There
is vagueness on whether feminine waste ought to be considered as
biomedical waste or plastic waste (Rajinder Kaur, 2018) .

Transition: Now that I’ve proven to you the causes that make menstruation products are pricier, let
me now show how we can solve this issue.

3.0 Topic Sentence 3

● Make feminine care products are vital as toilet tissue, soap and seat cover. The government
needs to set standards for all human necessities without making gender differences as the
measure. Women hygiene products must be included as the human needs to make life
easier and comfortable.
● Provide free period products at the food bank areas and restrooms. The government
agencies, non-government agencies and the people themselves must do this together.
Don’t wait for anyone to start. How? Just put the sanitary pads at the proper place in the
restroom.

3.1 Supporting Detail 1

3.1.1 Specific detail
● A Bill for an Act of the Scottish Parliament to make arrangements with the
expectation of complimentary period items for any individual who needs them
(Claire Diamond, 2020) .
3.1.2 Specific detail
● The time frame item conspire is accessible to all states kept up with schools
and 16 to 19 instruction associations in England. It gives free period items to
students who need them in their place of study (GOV.UK, 2021).
3.1.3 Specific detail
● Nancy Kramer (2013) stated in her speech in Tedx Talk, the Apple corporate
headquarters provide free tampons and pads for everyone to use.

3.2 Supporting Detail 2 (Benefits of doing those solutions)

3.2.1 Specific elaboration
● Women who can’t afford to buy sanitary pads, tampons or period pain
relievers can use the provided stuff easily. Therefore, period poverty can be
prevented and women can live normally without facing hard times when they
are in period phase.
3.2.2 Specific elaboration
● Women who get periods unexpectedly can easily reach sanitary pads
provided without being panicked to seek others' help. Period phase is surely
hard because women have to face unstable mood and hormone changes.
III. CONCLUSION

Review of the Main Points :

● Today, I first highlighted the issue which inspired me to give a speech about ‘women should
pay less for period supplies’ today. I have clarified about period poverty and elaborate the
evidence to give a clear picture about the problem that arises.
● Second, I proved how the problem came from the pink tax and menstrual waste
management. Few statistics are also explained detailly to justify my points.
● Finally, I showed two steps that must be taken. Firstly, make the period supplies as crucial
as other needs by setting a standard price for it. Secondly, provide free sanitary pads or
tampons in the restrooms and food banks for people in need. I also stated the examples
done by a few parties from other nations and two benefits from the solutions.

Restate the thesis statement :

● With all the evidence and proof that I have clarified today, I am confident, women have the
right to pay less for period supplies. The menstruation products issue is undeniably crucial
and must be solved before it becomes out of control. Therefore, all of us must play our own
ability and power to prevent these problems from being a bad norm in women's lives which
end up damaging our country's reputation.

Closure:
● To conclude my speech today, I am truly hoping to all audiences here to take action even if
it is a small contribution, you are actually helping the needy. If you can make changes in
your own circle, I believe this issue can be solved. Slowly but surely. Stop gender inequality
in any aspect especially in the term of needs. Humans have their own necessities. Taking
advantage of oneself is not right. Again, women should pay less for period supplies. If you
are not a woman, I believe you come from a woman who menstruates. To put the dot on
my speech, I would like to quote the words from Amit Kumar which is “Respect humanity,
not gender. Gender gives life but humanity gives that life a meaning.”
