Fathers of Cell Biology
Robert Hooke (English):
• Examined a piece of cork under the microscope, he saw
network.
• He called them cells.
Anton Leeuwenhoek (Dutch):
• Button maker, constructed good quality microscope by
16th century.
• First to examine a drop of water under a microscope,
amazed.
• He was the first to describe various forms of bacteria
(smallest & simplest cell).
Fathers of Cell Biology
Schneiden – 1838 (lawyer/ botanist) & Schwann
(Zoologist) – 1939:
Proposed two concepts of cells theory:
• All organisms composed of one or more cells
• Cells are structure unit of life
• But both agree that cells arise from non cellular materials until
1855.
• The discovery of
cells followed from
the invention of the
microscope by
Robert Hooke, and
its refinement by
Anton Leewenhoek.
