ACTIVITY #1
Explain the Generic Social Work Helping Process

1. ASSESSMENT – The estimation of the value of worth of Social situation, weather the
problem can be resolved or not and how, what resources would be needed, are
available, and liabilities, strengths and weaknesses, constructive and destructive
courses of action.
- Assessment should show what the immediate problem is that
which is causing the present difficulty, the underlying problem,
overall situation which tends to perpetuate the immediate
problem, and the working problem composed of those
contributory factors that stand in the way of both remedy and
prevention which must be dealt with if change is to take place.

2. PLANNING - The process of determining where to go and identifying the

requirements for getting there in the most effective and efficient manner possible. It
involves the collection and examination of information and ideas, and the casting of
programs or policies to guide future actions. It includes deciding what objectives to
pursue within a given time frame, what to do and what resources to use in order to
attain these objectives.

3. INTERVENTION/PLAN IMPLEMENTATION – The INTERVENTION is an

application of a helping repertoire which consists of selected social work methods and
process used by the worker to attain the objectives of the helping process. They are
change inducing and resources providing actions guided by the professional
knowledge, values and skills of the worker. PLAN IMPLEMENTATION is the actual
process or procedure taken to ensure the fulfillment of the goal of the helping process.
The kind of action that may be needed to reach the goal will be determined by the
specific ways of accomplishing the roles and tasks that have been defined. The
emphasis is on working with rather than for people and the test of effectiveness of the
ongoing worker and the client is on the actions the latter is able to take in relation to
his problem.

4. EVALUATION – The act of measuring or estimating the impact of the social workers
intervention by comparing the conditions obtaining prior to treatment or intervention
and that goal has been achieved. Evaluation usually takes place after every major step
in the treatment or intervention phase. It enables the worker to determine the progress
and readiness of the client, the quality of the service and the client view of it.

5. TERMINATION – The social work process which consist of disengagement after

evaluation and stabilization of change. The most common reasons for terminating the
client and the worker.

 When the goals set by worker and the client have been reached.
 When, after a reasonable period of time, there has been very little
movement toward the attainment of the goals formulated, and the
prospect for any change in the situation is held unlikely.
 When the client thinks that the worker has provided sufficient help so
that it is now possible for the client to pursue problem solving on his
own.
 When the agency does not have the resources needed by client or the
worker does not get her agency’s approval no provide the services
needed by the client.

Two Terms Were Used In In Termination.

 TRANSFER- Process by which a client is referred by his social worker to another
worker, but in the same agency, because the former will no longer be able to
continue to working with the client, or they thinks another worker is in better
position to work with their client’s problem.
 REFFERAL - The process of helping a client to move on to another agency or
resources or make contact so as to acquire the help or services their needs.
