////Objective

 To determine the relationship between energy transfer by heat and the energy transfer by
work

Experimental set up and procedure

The experimental set up is shown in fig 1 . The instrument consists of a brass drum is wrapped
around a belt with two weights (heavy weight , light weight) attached to it . A control box contains a
switch button and angular speed control button used to set the speed of the electrical motor , and the
thermometer used to measure the temperature of water inside the drum . and finally a revolution
counter is connected to motor to count its revolutions .

Procedure
1. Assemble the double part of the belts suspends the heavier weigh of 2 Kg , while the single
part suspends the carrier for the light weights and the spring balance .
2. Amount of water , approx.250g , at a temperature approximately 5-6 degrees below room
temperature is then carefully inserted into the drum taking care not to wet the outside of the
drum or the weights.
3. Rotating is then begun at a uniform speed of about 83 rev/min .
4. The light weights are adjusted to keep the heavy weight in floating equilibrium with the
spring balance pointer near the center of the scale .
5. After a few revolution the friction will became practically constant and the water temperature
will rise at an approximate 1C per 100 rev .
