Experiment 1

Data Table 1: Gas Observation

Chemical Observations

HCl + Zn Vigorous bubbling and production of gas and salt (ZnCl2)

Hydrogen gas + Flame Popping sound from the combustion of hydrogen gas

Mn2 + H2O2 Mild bubbling and production of MnO2 + H2O

Oxygen gas + The smoldering was reignited by the presence of oxygen gas
Smoldering Toothpick

Gas mixture + Flame Vigorous popping sound and fire was extinguished

Exercise 1 Answers

1. Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2
2. The hydrogen gas was created and combusted, resulting in a popping sound as it
interacted with the flames.
3. As a result of the oxygen gas production of oxygen, the toothpick’s smoldering flame
was rekindled due to oxygen gas.
4. The gas combination produced a loud popping sound, extinguishing the flames. The
hydrogen gas produced the popping sound, which was somewhat rekindled by the
oxygen.
5. When hydrogen gas reacts with fire, it produces a pop sound, but oxygen gas causes the
flame to grow larger or maybe reignite it.

Experiment 2
Data Table 2: Carbon Dioxide Reaction Observation

Reaction Observation

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 White precipitate is formed on the lime water

CO2 + BTB Change in color from orange to brown-ish

CO2 + Flame Flame is extinguished

Ca(OH)2 + Antacid Formation of bubbles

Water Gas

Antacid water gas + Smoldering toothpick extinguished

Ca(OH)2 + Breath Solution turns cloudy

Exercise 2 Answers

1. Step 1: NaHCO3 + CH3COOH → CH3COONa + H2CO3

Step 2: H2CO3 → H2O + CO2

2. Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O

The product produced is calcium carbonate which is a white precipitate

3. BTB became a brownish-orange color, indicating that the solution is acidic.

4. It produced carbon dioxide gas; according to our findings, the only gas capable of
extinguishing the flame is CO2, which is why the smoldering toothpick was extinguished.

5. We exhale carbon dioxide because a white precipitate is generated during the Ca(OH)2 +
CO2 reaction when CO2 comes into contact with lime water.
