2.1 Introduction
This guide explains how to install Flaresim. The guide also explains the procedures required after the
installation:
2.1.1 Audience
This guide is for the users installing Flaresim on their workstation.
• Microsoft® Windows 10
• Microsoft® Windows 8
• Microsoft® Windows 7® SP1 Enterprise/Ultimate
2.3 Licensing
To run Flaresim, you need a valid license for this release. The license can be configured either locally on
your computer or on a central license server. Flaresim uses FlexNet Publisher® licensing to provide a
secure licensing solution. Once Flaresim is successfully installed on your computer, you must install the
license to define the number of accessible modules. Refer to the Licensing Flaresim section for more
information.
Flaresim has minimum system requirements for installation and use. Before installing the product,
ensure that your system meets the requirements described in this section.
Note:
• Running the Flaresim software with the Minimum Supported configuration is not
recommended.
System Requirements

Note:
To run Flaresim efficiently, Schlumberger recommends at least 8 GB of RAM. The total system memory
must be greater than the memory used by the application. This ensures that your operating system has
dedicated RAM so that you do not have to use your page file (disk memory).
Are you installing the MSI installer on a computer that already has Flaresim installed – and are unsure
which installer was used to install this previous version?
Ensure to uninstall any versions of Flaresim that you are planning on overwriting if you don’t know what
installer was used. Problems can arise when you install an MSI format installer overtop of an EXE.
This problem does not exist if you have previously installed the Flaresim product using an MSI format
installer. This problem also does not exist if you are installing into a new folder.
Note:
It is recommended that the Schlumberger Licensing Tool is installed on every device attempting to run
Flaresim, for ease of configuration as well as troubleshooting.
1. The latest version of the Schlumberger Licensing Tool may be downloaded from the Software
Download Center:
a. Go to the Support Portal.
b. Log in to the site.
c. From the right pane of the Support Portal main page, click Download under Software
Download Center (SDC).
d. On the Welcome Message page, click Continue.
e. In the Product Group Name list (in the upper-left corner), click More Supported
Products > Utilities > FLEXlm.
f. In the table of FLEXlm downloads, click the Download icon for the Schlumberger
Licensing tool file you need.
i. Note: It is recommended to install the Schlumberger Licensing 202X.X product,
including the server device. The Server Only Package is a version of the
Schlumberger Licensing system that does not contain the Schlumberger
Licensing Tool application interface, and is only recommended for use on the
versions of Windows Server that do not support the Schlumberger Licensing
Tool.
2. Alternatively, a version of the Schlumberger Licensing Tool installer is also distributed with the
Flaresim installation. To locate the installer, navigate to the Flaresim installation folder under
the redist folder and locate the file SchlumbergerLicensing202X.exe.
If you were not provided a CodeMeter USB Dongle and provided the MAC Address of the device for
generation of the license, then your license is likely a MAC Tied License, and you may proceed straight to
the “Configuring the License” section:
If you were not provided a CodeMeter USB Dongle do not perform the CodeMeter Dongle Licensing
steps.
If you did not provide a MAC Address of a device for generation of the license and were instead
provided a CodeMeter USB Dongle you must perform the following sections prior to configuring the
license. These steps should be performed on the device that the CodeMeter Dongle will be plugged in
to.
Note: The MAC address license server upgrade to CodeMeter Dongle license must be explicitly
requested to your Account Manager.
1. The latest version of the CodeMeter Runtime may be downloaded from the following link:
https://www.wibu.com/uk/support/user/downloads-user-software.html
a. Under the CodeMeter User Download heading choose the CodeMeter User Runtime for
Windows and keep the default selection from the dropdown (for Windows 32/64-Bit).
Click the download button to download the installer.
2. Alternatively, a version of the CodeMeter Runtime installer is also distributed with the Flaresim
installation. To locate the installer, navigate to the Flaresim installation folder under the redist
folder and locate the file CodeMeterRuntime.exe.
Licenses may be hosted directly on the client device, or they may be hosted on a server device:
• If the license is intended to be hosted directly on the client device, perform the “Configuring the
Licensing System” section on the client device.
The license server is set to @localhost. This is the address used by the application when attempting to
find licenses on the local computer. You do not need to make changes if you only have a local license
server.
Click Status to display the licenses available and to check any potential issue with the license features.
In case of issue, click Diagnostics to obtain more information on the license file(s) and the license server
and to enable the access to the FlexNet debug log file. The Solution number 7532786 – “General License
Troubleshooting Steps for Symmetry” on the Support page describes the known issues and resolutions.
If you cannot solve the issue and are contacting Schlumberger support, please always provide the items
mentioned in step 5 of the Solution mentioned, including the contents of the diagnostics.
To connect to a license server, Schlumberger applications require the server address. The address is of
the form portnumber@machine.domain or portnumber@IP_address. For example, if the server is
named server1 and using port number 27010, the address is 27010@server1. If you do not know the
license server address, contact your system administrator.
If the license server has been configured with a port number within the default range of 27000–27009
the port number can be omitted. In this case, @server1 will also be a valid address.
1. Run the Schlumberger Licensing Tool program (located by default in: C:\Program Files
(x86)\Schlumberger\Schlumberger Licensing\202X.X\SLBLicensing.exe)
2. Enter the server details in the Manage Remote Servers panel.
a. The address is of the form portnumber@machine.domain or portnumber@IP_address.
3. Click Add license server to update the environment variable.
a. To remove the license server details, if desired, select the entry in the list and click
Remove license server.
4. Click OK to close the license configuration.
Click Status in the Schlumberger Licensing Tool to display the licenses available and to check any
potential issue with the license features.
