THE EFFECTS OF GLOBALIZATION ON
GLOBAL COMMUNICATION
By Anam Ahmed (Bizfluent.com, 2018)
1. Increased Business Opportunities

Many companies today hire employees that

are located in other countries and using video-
conferencing technology makes it easy to
connect with them from all over the world.
Technology also makes it easier for businesses
to streamline their relationship with suppliers
and customers through improved ordering,
tracking, and so on.
2. Fewer Cultural Barriers
When people from two different cultures try to
exchange information, the way they speak, their
body language or their mannerisms can be
interpreted differently by the other person.
Five causes of cultural barriers

1. Language
2. Stereotypes and prejudices
3. Signs and symbols
4. Behaviors and belief
5. “Us” versus “them
The following are the points which we need to keep
in mind to avoid cultural barriers in communication:
Avoid frame of reference
Use mutual language and signs
Ask questions when in doubt
Provide space for mutual respect
Open to new ideas
Accepting and adapting the different culture
Understand the context of communication
Avoid Stereotyped notions
Promote positive reception of cultural divergences
Learn about other cultures and their norms
3. Creation of a Global Village
"Global village," coined by theorist Marshall
McLuhan. Affected both by globalization and
global communication, the global village
iscreated when distance and isolation no longer
matter because people are connected
bytechnology.
LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNICATION IN
MULTICULTURAL SETTINGS

According to science, each person is genetically

unique. Each person has a unique genetic composition.
This uniqueness becomes even more heightened
because of individual experiences.
Humans are formed by forces
other than genetics, which are:

Family background
Religious affiliations
Educational achievements
Socio-cultural forces
Economic conditions
Emotional states
Other factors that shape
human identities
People interacting with those coming from unfamiliar cultures may
have communication difficulties. Most people tend to conclude that
miscommunication results from a speaker’s lack of proficiency in a
language. What is not realized is the fact that even with excellent
language skills, people may still experience miscommunication.
(Mardonio and Martin, 2018)
It is indeed a challenge to communicate with a person with
cultural diversity because the context may differ depending
on the person's perception of word meaning concerning
their culture.

The culture shapes so much of the way a person

interacts with each other, and then when you think
about language barriers and vocabulary used by
different generations, it is easy to see where
miscommunication can happen.

identical twin.

Family background, Religious affiliation,
Educational Achievements, Economic
Conditions, & Emotional Estates.
The diversity of people & cultures impacts
communication.
CONTINUATION
Multicultural Settings
Culture – Learned patterns, Attitudes & Beliefs
shared by a group of People.
Multicultural – A society that contains several
culture/al or ethnic groups.

Multicultural Communication – focuses on

the dynamics of communication across
cultures. It happens when people of two
different cultures meet. Also, what
happens when people from a variety of
cultures & ethnicities come together in
one organization, community or country.
5 Barriers for Effective
Communication

1. Language Barrier
2. Stereotypes & Prejudice
3. Signs & Symbols
4. Behaviors & Beliefs
5. US vs. THEM (Ethnocentrism)
How to overcome Cross
Cultural Barriers
Embrace diversity and accommodate cultural differences
Promote open communication
Lead open discussions about team norms and shared
company culture
Rally the team around a shared vision or common cause
Leading cultural diversity as a global leader

The best way to avoid such things is to learn about other cultures and set an
awareness of how one will react & behave when in such a situation.
