#559, immediately could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage. I found the driver to be standing in
the front office of the bus barn. He identified himself as the driver and that his name was Jeffrey
Tucker. While speaking with Mr. Tucker, I noticed that his eyes were watery and I could smell the odor
of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath as he spoke. Mr. Tucker was asked if had consumed
any alcohol prior to driving. He advised no. Deputy Sigman asked Mr. Tucker if he would be willing to
perform field sobriety. He agreed.
While Deputy Sigman performed field sobriety, I noticed that Mr. Tucker was very unsteady on
his feet and that he was unable to follow simple instructions. After field sobriety was completed, I asked
Mr. Tucker if he would provide a breath sample in my alco-sensor. He agreed. My alco-sensor gave a
reading of 0.030. I then asked Mr. Tucker again when he last had consumed an alcoholic beverage. He
advised he had not, then advised that he drank some wine around 11:00. I then placed him under
arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol while operating a commercial motor vehicle. I read him
the Georgia implied consent notice for commercial motor vehicle driver suspects for blood. Mr. Tucker
gave a verbal yes. After being placed in the rear of my patrol vehicle, Mr. Tucker asked if I could reread
the Georgia implied consent notice for commercial motor vehicle driver suspect. After being reread, Mr.
Tucker refused the test. Mr. Tucker was then transported to the Pickens County Sheriffs Office, where
he was turned over to the jail staff for booking procedures.
After Mr. Tucker was turned over to the jail staff, I relocated to the Pickens County Bus Barn and
learned that 18 children were loaded on the bus at Jasper Middle School and then taken to Tate
Elementary School, where 22 more children loaded the bus. A total of 40 children were on the bus
when Mr. Tucker began his drop off route. Warrants were taken for Mr. Tuckers arrest for Driving
Under the Influence, Failure to Maintain Lane, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, 40 counts of Child
Endangerment, 40 counts of Reckless Conduct, and Cruelty to Children 2nd Degree. A list of all
children on the bus when Mr. Tucker began his route was given to the investigating Trooper on August
23, 2022 from the Pickens County Bus Barn.
This incident was audio and video recorded on WatchGuard 4RE 0342B.
