Acitivity 2: Analyzing the Elements of Arts

The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo

The creation of Adam is based on the principles of organization, which include balance,
emphasis, unity, and line. In this painting, balance is achieved through the horizontal lines formed by the
bodies and hands of God and Adam. The background is also balanced, with the earth on one side and the
number of angels on the other. Emphasis is achieved through the value of the painting, which creates a
contrast between the darker background and the brighter God and Adam. Unity is achieved through the
similarity of the skin tone and body figure of God and Adam, as well as the proportion of both figures. In
addition, implied lines are achieved through the hands of God and Adam and the eyes of both figures.
This artwork depicts the spiritual moment when God creates Adam in his own image. The
expressions on the faces of God and Adam, as well as the angry angels, tell a story of excitement,
humility, and jealousy. Body: The excited expression of God shows that he is pleased with his creation.
The humble expression of Adam indicates that he is eager to meet his creator. The lifted index finger
suggests that he is impatient to get started. The angry angels may be jealous of the man that God has
created, or they may be disapproving of the act itself.
