Introduction to Tayabas Studies

Instructions
Research in the Library ( Casa Comunidad) and google search historical
documents about Tayabas during the Spanish period from 1575 - 1989.
Answer the following questions:
1. When or what year was Tayabas considered an" "encomienda" of the
King of Spain? What is an encomienda? . Describe briefly encomienda in
3-5 sentences.
 The year when Tayabas considered an encomienda is in the year
1575-1591 based on the book.
 The encomienda was a Spanish labour system that rewarded
conquerors with the labour of conquered non-Christian peoples.
 The labourers, in theory, were provided with benefits by the
conquerors for whom they laboured, including military protection and
education. Encomienda, which is loosely translated as "trustee," was
a formal system of forced labor used in Spanish colonies in the
Philippines and Latin America with the goal of promoting conquest
and colonization. Under this arrangement, the indigenous
community's leaders paid homage to the colonists by giving them
food, clothing, minerals, or laborers. Early Spanish colonialism's
economics relied heavily on this method.Encomienda was intended
by the Spanish Crown to be a system of obligations shared by
colonists and indigenous people. Native Americans would contribute
modest labor and tribute, while colonists would impart religious and
cultural knowledge. In fact, demands for tribute and labor well beyond
the bounds that had been set.
2. What Structures were built in Tayabas during the Spanish Period? Where are they

3. What is the work of the Cofradia de San Jose led by Hermano Pule? Why is this
group considered "illegal" or a bad influence by the Spaniards during their time?
 The work of the Confradia de San Jose that Hermano Puli fought against the
secularization of Spanish Friars, and he sought for equality especially on the
union of men and women. Hermano Puli founded the Cofradia de San Jose as
an answer and tried to veer from the Catholic Church.
 Because it is the way of Hermano Puli fought those Spaniards for the equality of
man and women of that time, he showed to them that there must be an equality
that need legal and to be that influenced that equality must always be there.
4. Who is Don Enrique de Borbon y CAstellvi? Why is he considered a good "Duke" for
the Tayabasin?
 Enrique de Borbón y Castellví, 2nd Duke of Seville, was a Spanish aristocrat who
became the second Duke of Seville. He was the eldest son of the controversial
Infante Enrique, Duke of Seville, grandson of Charles IV of Spain and younger
brother of Francis, Duke of Cádiz, king consort of Isabella II of Spain.
 Years later, he was rehabilitated and able to return to Spain, but uncomfortable
with his position at court, he was sent to the Spanish East Indies (now
the Philippines, then a Spanish colony) as governor of Tayabas Province.

5. Why is the historical date of 13th of August controversial? Is this actually the date of
the liberation of Tayabas from Spain?
 Because of what happened and it is the liberation of Tayabas from Spain. The
town of Tayabas was freed from the hands of the Spanish conquerors on August
13, 1898. The Katipuneros, led by General Miguel Malvar, marched successfully
from the house of the dolendos in barangay Mateuna to the patio of the church to
perform the surrender ceremony and The Philippine flag will be waved for the
first time, at the tower.
