Analysis of the Leadership and Management Styles of Tesla and Vinfast

Outline of Project
As an entry level staffer for NICVN, one must understand basic management and leadership
styles to identify qualified candidates for customers. To complete the onboarding process, one
should create a report detailing the management and leadership styles for Viettel; however, to
understand basic management and leadership theories, this analysis will explore Vinfast and
Tesla. In furtherance of this, this report attempts to identify appropriate theories to then apply to
the organizations.

This report will focus on the senior managers as well as the organization given that culture
begins with the Chief Executive Officers (CEO) and spreads to their staff and directly into the
management team. This analysis will evaluate decisions related to business situations and the
formation of culture at the organizations.

Analyse the impact of the application of leadership and management theories on the
effectiveness of a large organisation. (3 paragraphs)

Henry Fayol recommended 14 principles of management. Number 14 refers to ‘esprit de corps’


which many companies interpret to mean uniforms and other symbols of the organization
(Godwin, et. al., 2017). At Vinfast, all front line employees wear a uniform to symbolically
connect them to one another to improve engagement (Vinfast, 2022). Eidelson and Bloomberg
(2022) reported that “the electric carmaker required production workers to wear black shirts with
the Tesla logo, or occasionally all-black shirts when a supervisor gave permission, according to
the ruling” (para. 3). A second principle espoused by Fayol was the idea of ‘unity of direction’

which suggests that each organization follows a plan (Godwin, et. al., 2017). In the case of
Vinfast, they have a strategic plan detailing their operations (Vingroup, 2022). Further, Tesla in
its 2021 Impact Report offers a diversified strategy for everyone to follow (Tesla, 2021). Finally,
both Tesla and Vinfast promote Fayol’s notion of ‘equity’ (Godwin, et. al., 2017). Both
companies comply with Vietnamese and US laws
against discrimination (Vietnamese Labor Law,
2019; National Archives, 2022). In the cases of
Vinfast and Tesla, both organizations are leaders
in their industries and home markets implying that
their adherence to Fayol’s principles makes them
effective. Further, wearing uniforms as well as
supporting efforts towards equity helps
organizations improve employee engagement (Heathbrook, n.d.)

Discuss different theories of leadership in relation to the management activities in different


organisations. (2 paragraphs)

The leadership theory of Burns identifies two types of leaders, transformational and transactional
(Langston, n.d.). Musk as head of Tesla represents a transformational type leader because of his
emphasis on the future and his vision that goes well beyond normal business goals (Archwell, &
Mason, 2021). At Tesla, he is leading his staff to develop not only affordable electric vehicles
but also Artificial Intelligence (AI) robots that will revolutionize manufacturing (CNET, 2021).
Further, he demonstrates the same leadership qualities at SpaceX with his goal to populate Mars
(CNET, 2022). Finally, he claims his acquisition of Twitter is for the purpose of reestablishing
an ‘open market’ for open dialogue and debate (Clayton, 2022). Clearly, Musk demonstrates the
qualities of a transformational leader in all of his endeavors.
