1. What happened to the Filipinos during Pre-Spanish period discuss for not less than 300
words good for ( 30 points )

ANSWER: The Spanish colonial period of the Philippines began when explorer Ferdinand

Magellan came to the islands in 1521 and claimed it as a colony for the Spanish Empire.
The period lasted until the Philippine Revolution in 1898.

Long before the arrival of the Spaniards, ancient Filipinos were living in scattered barangays and
ruled by different chieftains. Although, they were living separately, they were similar in many
ways: their religion, mode of dressing, houses, system of government and marriage practices and
economic activities.

When the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines in 1521, the colonizers used art as a tool to

propagate the Catholic faith through beautiful images. ... They replaced the arts that were once
done in a communal spirit and community setting for rituals. The church, particularly the friars,
became the new patron of the arts.

The existing literature of the Philippine ethnic groups at the time of conquest and conversion into
Christianity was mainly oral, consisting of epics, legends, songs, riddles, and proverbs. Spain not
only brought the Catholic religion to the Philippine islands it also brought with it its culture and
its cuisine. ... When the Spaniards arrived, they brought with them ingredients and labor-intensive
cooking methods that were unknown in the Philippines.

Before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, the people lived in small towns called barangays.
The leader of a barangay was called a Datu. Many barangays would cluster together for safety
and protection. In a period of heavy struggle and conflict, Filipinos of different backgrounds
united with a common goal: to resist colonialism. The revolution against Spain was
sparked in 1896 after Spanish authorities discovered the “Katipunan,” a
Filipino revolutionary society plotting against their colonisers.
The Philippines were claimed in the name of Spain in 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese
explorer sailing for Spain, who named the islands after King Philip II of Spain. They were
then called Las Felipinas.
