started its operations in 1995. Since its inception, Getz Pharma has shown unparalleled growth
both in qualitative as well as quantitative aspects. According to Information Medical Statistics

has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing Pharma firms in Pakistan.
Getz Pharma’s products are manufactured at its state of the art, cGMP approved pharmaceutical
plant at Karachi and tested at its Quality Control Laboratory which is pre-qualified by the World
Health Organization (WHO).

CORPORATE HERITAGE AND HISTORY:

Getz Pharma is a member of the Getz Group of Companies, which has a legacy of over 160
years. The Getz Group was founded in 1852 by a Prussian immigrant Joseph Getz and his three
brothers in Lower Lake, California, and began as a local general store. By the 1870s, the Getz
Brothers were marketing medicines, food products, and consumer goods to customers in
Shanghai, Hong Kong, Calcutta and Madras. Today, the Getz Group is home to more than
12,000 employees worldwide and distributes agricultural, biomedical, pharmaceutical and
technical products and consumer goods in over 50 countries across the world.

Getz Pharma was initially set up in 1995 by Getz Brothers & Co. Inc. At inception and formation
in 1995, Getz Pharma employed 45 people, and had a small revenue base with no international
operations. Today, Getz Pharma has transformed from a small manufacturing facility to a world-
class branded generic pharmaceutical company with a global outlook.  It employs more than
5,700 highly qualified people worldwide and has operations in South Asia, Central Asia, South-
East Asia, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

At Getz Pharma, they are committed to sharing their success with the community at large,
particularly with the underprivileged segments.

The primary goal of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) model is to successfully
integrate corporate responsibility concerns: social, environmental and economic, into the
company’s values, culture, operations and business decisions at all levels. This is how they
envision their corporate social responsibility: doing business ethically and in an environmentally
and socially responsible manner, while safeguarding growth and profits in line with the
expectations of the stakeholders.

Getz Pharma’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives are divided into four broad
categories:

1. Preservation of Cultural Heritage

2. Education and Skill building for the Underprivileged

5
3. Preservation of the Environment
4. Health for the Underprivileged

Getz Pharma is proud to contribute to these programs to ensure long-term benefits for the people
directly and indirectly impacted by their practices.

1. Revival of the Cultural Heritage:

Getz Pharma is devoted to the promotion of cultural heritage in the areas of theatre, cinema,
music, art and sports. Efforts that celebrate and promote peace, interfaith and intercultural
harmony are encouraged as they promote literacy, cultural tolerance, support customs and arts,
and uplift communities, thus making lives more fulfilling and enjoyable.

In the past, the company has supported theatrical performances, production of classical music,
encouraged interaction between local and international artisans and the spread of cultural
knowledge, and sponsored documentaries on cities and marginalized communities.

Getz Pharma has also sponsored the publication of books promoting the cultural heritage of
Pakistan. This includes sponsoring the printing and publication of Kalaam-e-Aarifaan, a
compilation of priceless sufiana kalaam in Urdu, Punjabi, Saraiki and Persian languages, which
took a decade of hard work.

2. Education and Skill Building for the Underprivileged:

Getz Pharma is committed to investing in the education of our nation’s underprivileged children
and youth.

As part of the educational initiatives, we support projects to reform and renovate public sector
educational institutions for the underprivileged. This includes setting up science and computer
laboratories, health rooms and libraries; providing educational resources such as books and
stationary; supporting educational visits and sporting activities of the students; providing need
and merit-based scholarships – all to ensure that students belonging to underprivileged families
are not deprived of quality schooling.

Getz Pharma has also contributed to research and training at top universities in Pakistan, such as
Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, and Habib University, Karachi,  within
neglected areas such as Social Sciences and Art. It has also promoted intellectual and innovative
capabilities in research-based analytics, and has exposed students to global best practices,
bridging the gap between academia and industry. One recent initiative in the field of education
and skill-building is the inauguration of the Getz Pharma Football Academy. Located in the low
income area of Sharafi Goth, Karachi and catering to children from ages 7-12, the Academy
provides professional coaching, football kits. Training supplies, and access to a top quality
football ground to the local youth. The Academy not only helps its members learn and play
professional football, it financially supports their primary school education. Such an initiative
provides children with a healthy recreational activity, ensures that they receive good quality
education and makes them role models in their family and community.

“GETZ PHARMA TAKES A LEED FOR PAKISTAN BY PRESERVING AND
PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT”

The industrial sector is the backbone of

Pakistan’s economic growth however, it also
contributes largely towards carbon emissions.
While effective environmental laws exist,
there is poor accountability for violations.
Since its inception in 1995, Getz Pharma has
always put the preservation of the
environment at the forefront of its CSR
activities and to date actively promotes green
initiatives in its business practices to create a healthy and safe environment for the sake of
posterity. “It is important that we as humans keep reminding ourselves that we are not alone on
this planet. There is a huge biological ecosystem that exists around us. If we want to live a better
and more sustainable life, we need to unlearn and relearn how to honor the cycle of life,” said,
Khalid Mahmoud, Managing Director & CEO of Getz Pharma, during a recent live show hosted
by Getz Pharma, on World Environment Day.
Wanting to create a truly green facility, Getz Pharma designed and built its new manufacturing
facility, Astola, as per the comprehensive guidelines laid out by U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC) to steer the country towards an environmentally sustainable future. Located in the
heart of Karachi’s Korangi Industrial Area, the Astola plant is equipped with state-of-the-art
green building features, designed to efficiently reduce carbon emissions, water usage, and energy
consumption.
Getz Pharma’s compliance with the highest environmental standards has earned its Astola plant
the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification,
awarded by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).  It is worthy to note, that Getz Pharma is the
first pharmaceutical company in Pakistan and entire South Asia to receive this esteemed
accreditation.

Here’s how Getz Pharma achieved LEED for Pakistan:

1. Getz Pharma takes a LEED for Pakistan by conserving water for future generations:

8
PROBLEM: A huge amount of municipal and industrial untreated effluents are being deposited into the
environment, which can cause waterborne diseases such as hepatitis. Akin to this, researchers carried out
a study in which they collected samples from five different drains, each having the combined effluent of many
industries. Surprisingly, the majority of the water quality parameters didn’t equate to the National
Environmental Quality Standards in the country.

SOLUTION:  Getz Pharma installed a state-of-the-art effluent treatment plant at the Astola plant, designed to
treat liquid effluents and recycle wastewater for non-process purposes such as gardening. They have also
installed water-efficient fixtures such as self-closing faucets to ensure that less water is wasted during usage.
By taking such comprehensive water-conserving measures at the Astola plant, Getz Pharma will reduce
potable water consumption by 59%.

2. Getz Pharma takes a LEED for Pakistan by reducing the carbon footprint for future generations:

PROBLEM: In 2019, Pakistan’s carbon emissions (CO2) per capita was at 1.09 tons, according to data
technology firm, Knoema. At present, the country emits 223.6 million tons of CO2 by burning fossil fuels and
industrial purposes which is a major risk for human health.

SOLUTION: To reduce carbon emissions from its business practices, Getz Pharma has installed the largest
state-of-the-art private-sector solar panels at our new manufacturing facility, Astola. These solar panels will
help generate up to 466 KW (extendable up to 700 KW) on-site renewable energy and reduce carbon emission
by 42%. Additionally, Getz Pharma has planted 7000 indigenous trees and shrubs at the Astola plant to reduce
pollution and improve outdoor air quality.

9
3. Getz Pharma takes a LEED for Pakistan by reducing energy consumption:

PROBLEM: Pakistan’s energy sector faces a severe power generation crisis; this directly hinders the
economic development of the country.

SOLUTION: Getz Pharma installed energy-efficient equipment such as steam boilers and centralized air-
conditioning systems at the Astola plant to reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, while the growing
industrial activity only increases the burden on the country’s grid, Getz Pharma has taken a step in the
right direction by investing in renewable energy. The new manufacturing facility, Astola, has the largest
private-sector solar panels, generating up to 466 KW (extendable up to 700 KW) on-site renewable energy
to reduce energy consumption by 42%.
