1. INTRODUCTION

The carbohydrates are biomolecules mainly of carbon, hydrogen

and oxygen; but some of them contain other biomolecules like:
sulfur, nitrogen.

They are the principal energy source of the human body, it can be
found in the aliments and drinks, through a process called
oxidation.

The carbohydrates,
chemically, are defined
like polyhydroxy
aldehydes or
polyhydroxy ketones;
that denote the
presence of the
hydroxyl, which occurs
several times along the
carbonate chain, and a carbonyl group, which may be an aldehyde
or ketone.

2. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NUTRIENT

Carbohydrates are organic compounds made up of the elements

like carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen and oxygen atoms
are present in the same proportions, 2:1.
Carbohydrates mainly come from plants and are a good source of
energy for the body. There are three main types of carbohydrates:
Monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides.
The monosaccharides have a simple chemical composition, and are
known as simple sugars. Examples of them are glucose, fructose
and galactose.
Disaccharides are also known as
complex sugars as they have
complex chemical compositions.
Examples of these would be
maltose, lactose and sucrose.

Polysaccharides are the most

chemically complex carbohydrate
and its examples include starch
and cellulose.
The generalized formula for carbohydrates is CnH2mOm.

3. FUNCTIONS OF THE NUTRIENT

The main function of the carbohydrates is that they provide energy.

They also save proteins, prevent the creation of ketone bodies and
are part of the connective and nervous tissue.

They provide the most user-friendly energy each gram provides 4

kcal. Glucose is the only source of energy for the brain, which
consumes about 100 g per day. They give us energy through a
process called oxidation.

They help us to
regulate our brain
activity. They are the
base of our food
pyramid and should
therefore play a major
role in our diet.
4. FOOD WHERE WE CAN FIND IT

This are some aliments where we can find the carbohydrates:

- Grains: such as bread,

noodles, pasta, crackers,
cereals, and rice.
- Fruits: such as apples,
bananas, berries, mangoes,
melons, and oranges.
- Dairy products: Like milk
and yogurt.
- Legumes: including dried
beans, lentils, and peas

5. CURIOSITIES

Some curiosities of the carbohydrates are:

1. The carbohydrates help to the digestive and nervous system.

2. Help to eliminate from the body waste products.

3 The Best power supply to get carbohydrates is in natural

products, like quinoa, banana.

4 the carbohydrates apport 4 calories per gram

5 In almost of all the drinks and foods there are carbohydrates
