It is an 1876 novel by Mark Twain about a boy growing up along the Mississippi River. It
is set in the 1840s in the town of St. Petersburg, which is based on Hannibal, Missouri,
where Twain lived as a boy.

The author published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876, saying the character
was based on three boys. He later said that he himself was the inspiration behind the
character, and that Tom Sawyer "was not the real name … of any person I ever knew,
so far as I can remember".

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a sequel to Tom Sawyer, Twain's novel
