Arranger's note
As with other books in this series, the challenges of working with copyright material have forced me
to look beyond the more obvious choices. 'Autumn Leaves', found in so many jazz books, is omitted
in favour of the equally strong 'September in the Rain' and (for those celebrating Halloween!)
'Witchcraft'. Added to these are a calypso, waltz, and shuffle to brighten dark evenings and to
complement the classic ballads 'Autumn in New York' and '(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow'. We also
celebrate the striking colours of the season ('Maple Red' and 'Autumn Glory'), including through the
rich harmonies of an authentic jazz sound. Feel free to expand on the written material and make
these pieces your own, and see if you can spot the hidden reference to 'Autumn Leaves' near the
end of one of the ballads ...
