Listening
Part 2 – Sentence completion

‘Guessing’ the gap

One of the most useful things when filling the gap is to know what kind of word is needed. This
is something we can conclude as a result of analysing the words before and after the gap. These
would give us almost 95% accuracy of what word is needed, thereby increasing our chances to
get the right one. Take for example, the following sentence:

Our day off was completely ___________ by the last minute call from our boss, urging us to get
back to work as soon as possible.

Certainly, there are many types of words that can fill in the gap. Predicting them all would be
almost an impossible task. However, these words would usually fit into only one part of speech.
In this case, the gap will be better filled by an adjective. Knowing this, we are somehow better
prepared to listen and get the word missing.

Task A

result of the pandemic? How do you have fun at home?

Task B
Before you listen, try guessing the part of speech
that goes in each gap.
