learning gaps and provide further intervention amidst the educational challenges experienced
by learners and teachers.

III. Narrative Report

The COVID-19 pandemic had left the learners hanging on a thread in coping with the
desired competencies thus Sinala Elementary School responded to the call of the Department
to conduct interventions for bridging learning gaps and intensifying learning gains that will
seeks to bridge learning gaps during the implementation of modular distance learning. In
preparation with that, the school head organize a meeting to discuss the said activity.
Teachers were asked to prepare two-week home learning plans which have different
intervention/remedial activities for their learners. The changes in school calendar activities
were explained to parents. They were asked to choose their preferred mode of remedial
activity. Out of 34 Grade 5 pupils, 20 selected online while 14 choose to home visit. After
that, the teacher gave the schedule of each learner.
On the first week, the one-on-one online remedial activity started at exactly 8 o’clock
in the morning and ended at 4 o’clock in the afternoon via messenger and Google meet. In the
first part of activity, the learners were assessed with reading evaluation process. In which,
they’re given English and Tagalog passage/story, and they have to read it, until they reach no
errors in terms of reading. The teacher used 3 English and Tagalog passages/stories. It also
contains increasing level of vocabulary and reading comprehension. Based on the reading
assessment test, some learners were not able to read in comprehension and have a hard time

the second part of the activity, the teacher asked the learners to recite the multiplication table
and to answer the multiplication drill. Some learners recited well and answer the drill
correctly. For the follow-up activity, learners who have a hard time reading will read again
and the video will be send to teacher same with learners who failed to recite and answer the
math drill.
On the second week, the teacher went house-to-house to conduct remedial activity.
With her personal protective apparel, the teacher also wore her armor of strength, passion,
dedication and patience to sustain education despite the distance, unfavourable weather
conditions and health risks in order to bridge learning gap. Collaboration was the key factor
in this endeavour. The teacher coordinated with the target learner’s parents with a home
visitation form given to them. Same with online remedial activity, the learners were assessed
with reading evaluation process and asked to recite the multiplication table and to answer the
multiplication drill. As the teacher conducted the remedial activity, she saw that the learners
were very eager to learn how to read and solve math drill. They show interest and
longingness with their teacher because they haven’t met in person since they’re just studying
at home. Their excitement on the activities was evident, and they were so happy with the
face-to-face interaction wherein they actively participated with the teacher.
The teacher also had time to communicate with the parents and to observe the home
background which helped her to better understand the learner and more of their home
problems which affect their studying habits. This bridging gap and intensifying learning gains
as the beginning step to foster academic ease during the Covid-19 pandemic must not stop
here and now, rather it must be integrated throughout the curriculum. This will continue to
bring the light leading the learners to success- a path to save the future.
