The Effectiveness of Face-to-face Classes Despite the COVID-19

Pandemic in Selected Grade 11 STEM 1103 Students at Muntinlupa

National High School - Main

Introduction
Will face-to-face classes be effective amidst pandemic? This COVID-19 pandemic
affected many aspects in our lives and one of which is the education system. Many
governments around the world have decided to temporarily close schools that have
impacted millions of students since the outbreak and threat of the pandemic. Traditional
education systems or face-to-face classes are replaced with online distance learning for the
sake of everyone’s safety, especially the students. The Department of Education decided to
implement online and modular distance learning so that students can still be safe and still
learn in the midst of a pandemic. There are adjustments made in terms of how students gain
knowledge with the wide use of technology in which some students are struggling to cope up
with.

Despite the fact that online learning is a useful tool for overcoming the obstacles of the
pandemic crisis, some studies show that it is currently an education crisis. According to a
research conducted by TIME last January 2021 many students still can't keep up with this
type of learning in different parts of the Philippines especially in provincial areas due to some
factors like inaccessibility to the internet, lack of equipment that can be used in distance
learning, financial problems, and many more. As a result of the test that they conducted in
different parts of the Philippines, the academic performance of students gradually decreased
by 20% as compared to the results last 2020. That's why students and teachers still prefer
the traditional way of learning which is face-to-face class set up. With that being said, our
study aims to determine how effective face-to-face classes in selected Grade 11 STEM 1103
students of Muntinlupa National Highschool - Main despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods
Muntinlupa National High School-Main has junior high school and senior high
school. In senior highschool there are 5 strands: STEM, ICT, GAS, ABM and HE. For our
research we decided to choose the students of Grade 11 STEM 1103 of MNHS-Main for
determining the effectiveness of face-to-face classes despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
This group consists of 53 students with the age ranging from 15 to 18 years old. We
selected a small group of students so that we can conduct and produce data
conveniently and accurately.

For the sample, we conducted our survey to 31 out of 53 students of STEM 1103
and let them answer the questions on our questionnaire about our topic. We used
probability sampling which involves random selection allowing us to make strong

statistical inferences about the whole group and then we used simple random sampling
so that the results are precise and unbiased.

The researchers applied the quantitative method since this method applies and
used Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,
mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and
surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.
In this research we choose to use questionnaires. Which will be able to determine the
possible outcome for our result and discussion. For the researchers to gather data,
survey design which helps this research to evaluate the perception of the respondents
by distributing the survey questionnaire, using likert scale. Through the following scaling
by using yes or no, how confident, how prepared and how they can come up with
face-to-face classes, the data that the researchers used was able to gather data as a
basis on the effectiveness of face-to-face classes despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nevertheless, this may help the researchers to reach and aim goals as what the study is
needed to find out.

The equipment used in gathering these datas is in digital form which is called Google
Form. It is a web - based software that enables you to create surveys and quizzes, and it's
part of Google's suite of web-based products, which also includes Google Docs, Google
Sheets, and Google Slides. Moreover, it is a flexible tool that can be used for a variety of
tasks, such as gathering RSVPs for an event or producing a pop quiz. The first part of the
survey questionnaire is the demographic profile of the respondents, specifically their age.
While the second part contains ten questions connected to how effective implementing
face-to-face classes despite the pandemic.

The majority of the 31 respondents at Muntinlupa National High School-Main Section

STEM 1103 want face-to-face sessions, according to this study. The questionnaire indicates
that the majority of respondents are in the middle of the confidence scale when it comes to
the implementation of face-to-face classes. The respondents want face-to-face classes, but
not during the pandemic, according to the researchers. The results suggest that the
respondents agree on how they can stay up with face-to-face classes. The majority of
respondents assess their academic success in face-to-face classes as good, and they
believe that knowing their effective learning strategies is one way to improve their academic
performance in prospective face-to-face classes. Face-to-face learning is preferred by
respondents over online distance learning. Despite the pandemic, respondents believe it is
unsafe to implement face-to-face classes. However, respondents believe they can focus
more on face-to-face classes. Face-to-face classes are successful for students, according to
this research, but when implemented in a pandemic, students did not agree due to the rising
COVID-19 cases.
