a. Discussing new Does anyone here have any idea what the reading strategies

practicing new skills
1 (PRE-ACTIVITY)
Okay, class!

Reading strategies is a broad phrase that refers to the

deliberate and explicit acts that assist readers in translating print
to meaning. Strategies for improving decoding and reading
comprehension assist all students, but are especially important
for beginning readers, struggling readers, and English Language
Learners.

b. Discussing new For this lesson, the reading strategies we are going to use are
concepts and scanning, skimming, and close reading.
practicing new skills
2 (DEEPENING) Scanning is a reading approach used when a person scans a
text fast in order to find specific information, such as names or
numbers.

Skimming is done when reading a text fast to acquire a rough

notion of meaning.

Close reading is a reading approach that involves locating

precise facts and details that lead to an interpretation or
significance of the text's meaning.

So, these strategies help the reader's comprehension of the

content. In other words, they are the tools that readers employ
to comprehend what is printed on a page.

ACTIVITY A:
Direction: Identify the following sentences, if it is a SCANNING,
SKIMMING or CLOSE READING.

1. To look through the television guide/program

schedule to plan your evening.
2. To search for a word in a dictionary or index
3. Which reading strategies are you going to use to answer
the question?

to COVID-19 then, use the appropriate reading strategies to
create a reaction paper.

Reflections: Writing: Read to Lead

In this task, you will find out that reading strategies are also
needed to resolve challenges in our daily lives.
Write how your chosen reading strategy (Scanning, Skimming,
Close Reading) will help you address the challenging life
situations below. Use this rubric to guide your writing.

Example:

Your classmate asks you if you have the cell phone number
given by your adviser. Her reason is her mother cannot call your
adviser as she always receives the reply, "Your number cannot
be completed as dialed."

I will use the Scanning Reading Strategy to help my classmate

in this situation. I will scan the name of our adviser on my phone
and send her our adviser's cell phone number. In this way, she
can check if she has the correct cell phone number of our
J. Assignment adviser. In case we have the same wrong number, I will send a
message to our adviser through messenger to inform her about
the situation. I love helping my classmates even though I haven't
seen them yet. I know I will find true friends by being kind.

It's your turn now.

1. Grandmother arrives home from her doctor. She asks you to

get her prescription because she forgot already what her doctor
had told her. What she remembers is that her doctor wrote the
instructions on the back page of her prescription. She says she
has to know if skipping coffee while taking her medicine is still
required.

2. Your little brother is crying. His big toy truck is accidentally

damaged by his playmates. To pacify him, your mother instructs
you to buy another big toy truck. However, you are not allowed
to go out because of the pandemic.

3. Your best friend sent a message that she is bothered by the

long, complicated message sent to her by her mother who is an
OFW. She said she needs your advice so she forwarded her
mother's message to you.
