READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Write your name and class on all work you hand in.
Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper.
You may use a soft pencil for any diagrams or graphs.
Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid.

Answer all questions.

Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles in
degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question. You are expected to use a graphic
calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are required to
present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator commands. You are reminded
of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together. The number of marks is given in brackets
[ ] at the end of each question or part question.
The total mark is 100.

To commemorate EXO’s 10th anniversary, SM Entertainment designed a special gift box. The box
has a volume 100cm3 and of negligible thickness in the shape of a prism with the cross-sectional

Section B: Statistics [60 marks]

5 (a) "ANTIFRAGILE" is a song recorded by South Korean girl group LE SSERAFIM.

Find the number of ways the letters of the word “ANTIFRAGILE” can be arranged if
(i) there are no restrictions, [1]
(ii) F and R must not be next to each other, [2]
(iii) Consonants (N, T, F, R, G, L) and vowels (A, I, E) must alternate. [3]

(b) In an online poll, a proportion p of the voters chose Kazuha as their favourite

member of LE SSERAFIM. A sample of 10 voters are taken at random. The random variable
X denotes the number of voters in the sample who chose Kazuha as their favourite member.
(i) Comment on the suitability of using the binomial probability distribution to model

this situation and state an assumption made. [2]

(ii) Write down an expression for P( X = 4) in terms of p. [1]

It is given that the value of P( X = 4) is 0.2 and p  0.5 .

(iii) Show that the value of p is 0.3 (correct to 1 decimal place). [3]

6 A concert promoter claims that the mean price of a ticket to a BLACKPINK concert is $200. A media
company collected information on ticket price, $x, for 50 randomly chosen people who
bought tickets. The results are summarised as follows.

 ( x − 200) = 500  ( x − 200) 2

= 55000

(i) Test, at the 4% level of significance, the concert promoter’s claim that the mean price
of a ticket to a BLACKPINK concert is $200. You should state your hypotheses and define
any symbols you use. [5]
(ii) The media company took another random sample of n tickets, and found that the
average ticket price for this sample is $206. If the standard deviation of ticket price
is now known to be $32.25, find the maximum value of n such that there is insufficient
evidence at the 4% level of significance to reject the concert promoter’s claim. [2]

7 JYP Entertainment believes that the popularity of a K-pop group affects their concert
ticket sales. The popularity of a group can be measured by an index, x , which is measured
from, 1  x  10 , where 10 indicates most popular and 1 indicates least popular. A study
was conducted over six months to investigate the relationship between the popularity index
of eight artistes and their concert ticket sales. The results are summarised in the following
table.
Group JYP 2PM NiziU DAY6 GOT7 Wonder Girls TWICE SKZ

Popularity Index, x 1.2 2.0 2.7 3.8 4.8 5.6 6.9 8.0
Concert Ticket Sales, 2.2 4.5 5.8 7.3 7.4 9.0 9.9 10.8
(In thousands), $y

(i) Draw a scatter diagram for these values, labelling the axes. [1]
(ii) It is thought that concert ticket sales y can be modelled by one of the formulae
y = ax 2 + b or y = c ln x + d
where a, b, c and d are positive constants.
Use your diagram in (i) to explain which of the two is a more appropriate model, and
calculate its product moment correlation coefficient, correct to 4 decimal places. [2]
(iii) The data for a particular group appears to be recorded wrongly. Indicate the
corresponding point on your diagram by labelling it P. Find the equation of the least
squares regression line for the remaining points using the model that you have chosen
in (ii). [2]
(iv) The ticket sales for ITZY are found to be $800,000. Estimate the popularity
index of ITZY and comment on the reliability of your estimate. Explain why
neither the regression line of ln x on y nor x on y should be used. [3]

8 (a) A music streaming service has released statistics regarding the different K-pop groups
that people are listening to. Events A and B are defined below:
A: have Aespa in their top 5 artistes
B: have BTS in their top 5 artistes
It is given that P(A) = 0.7, P(B) = 0.6 and P( A | B ') = 0.8. Find…

(i) P(A  B ') [1]

(ii) P(A  B) [1]

(iii) P(B ' | A) [2]

For a third event C, it is given that P(C ) = 0.5 and that A and C are independent.

(b) Find P(A  C ') and hence state an inequality satisfied by P(A ' B  C ) . [4]

9 At a SOMI meet and greet session, there were n people in the room.
(a) Assume that a randomly chosen person is equally likely to have been born on any day of
the week. The probability that the people in the room were all born on different days of
the week is denoted by P. Find P when n = 3 and n = 4 . [3]
(b) Assume now that a randomly chosen person is equally likely to have been born in any
month of the year. Find the smallest value of n such that the probability that the people
in the room were all born in different months of the year is less than 0.5. [4]
(c) Assume now that a randomly chosen person is equally likely to be born on any of the
365 days in the year. It is given that for the case n= 21, the probability that the people
in the room were all born on different days of the year is 0.55631, correct to 5 places of
decimals. Find the smallest value of n such that the probability that at least two of the
people were born on the same day of the year exceeds 0.5. [5]

10 In a game with a 4-sided fair dice numbered 1 to 4 on each face, the score for a throw is
the number on the bottom face of the dice. A player gets to choose either option A or
option B.
Option A: The player rolls the dice once. The score x is the amount of money $x that the player wins.
Option B: The player rolls the dice twice. The first score is x and the second score is y.
If y  x , the player wins $2xy , but if y < x, the player loses $(x – y). Otherwise,
they neither win nor lose any money.

(i) Find the expected amounts won by a player in one game when playing option A
and when playing option B. Show that option B is a better option. [5]
(ii) Suggest why a risk averse player would still choose option A. [1]
(iii) Show that the variance of the amount won by a player in one game when playing
option A is 1.25. [2]
In a competition, NMIXX members Sullyoon and Haewon each play the game 50 times.
Sullyoon chooses option A and Haewon chooses option B.
It is given that the variance of the amount won by a player in one game when playing

887
option B is .
16
(iv) Find the distributions of the total amounts won by Sullyoon and Haewon respectively
in the competition. [2]
(v) Show that the probability of the total amount won by Sullyoon exceeding the total
amount won by Haewon in the competition is approximately 0.120. [3]
