Possession with Aerobic Fitness

Drill Objective(s)
1) Develop the ability of players to transition quickly.
2) Develop a teams ability to maintain possession.
3) Develop players aerobic fitness.
* Drill No: PO23
* Age: 12-14
* No Players: 15 (12 if 3 teams of 4)
* Difficulty: Medium/Advanced
* Area/Time: 30x30yrds (20mins)

ORGANISATION:
30x30yrd grid marked by cones. 2 gate goals positioned as shown above.
* 5vs5 (+5)
* 3 teams in different colours.
Balls scattered around the sides of the playing area.
INSTRUCTIONS:
* Two teams play in the central area with one team supporting around the edge of the playing area. The team on the sides of the
playing area have only 1 touch.
* The teams in the central playing area compete to score by making 8 consecutive passes.
* On making 8 passes the teams rotate as follows: The scoring team (making the 8 passes) leaves the field and becomes the
supporting team.
* The conceding team must run out the playing area through a gate goal and re-enter the playing area through the opposite gate
goal (running around half the outside of the grid). The players have 15 secs from being scored onto to get out and re-enter the
playing area. A coach should time this. (Refer to diagram 2).
* The team that was supporting now enters the playing area.
* If the running team manages to get all their players back in to the playing area in 15 secs or less they begin with the ball. If not,
the new team in the middle get the ball).

The
* game is continuous and provides an aerobic intermittent type workout.
Outside
* players can pass to other outside players for only 1 pass (i.e. the ball must go back into the central area after this pass.

SCORING:
1o consequetive passes = 1 goal. This number can be varied to the level of the players.
KEY COACHING POINTS:

1) Outside players must be working hard up and down the lines to provide good supporting angles.
2) Transition on and off the field should be fast.
3) Encourage the running team to get back as quickly as possible within their 15 secs to reorganize once re-entering the playing
area.
4) Highlight that maintaining possession conserves energy and prevents exhaustive defending as in a real game scenario.
5) Play should be quick and with limited touches to maintain a good tempo.
6) Encourage switches of play to find space.
PROGRESSIONS
1) Increase or decrease the number of passes required to score a point.
2) Increase the playing area to increase the aerobic nature of the training.
3) Provide agility drills on the edges of the playing area the conceding teams have to perform on their way around the grid.

VARIATIONS:

1) 2 touch on the sides.


2) 2 touch in the central playing area (advanced players only).
3) Outside players cannot play to other outside plays.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:


Requires quick thinking and also a good aerobic capacity. Players need to stay switched on to know where immediate transitions need
to occur.
